Hey all,
Recently got my new computer and it came with an i7 920 overclocked to 3.57 GHz. However, each time i turned on my computer it would freeze afte the starting windows page. I'd restart the computer holding down on the power button and it would work perfectly. The event log showed this error:
"Performance power management features on processor 1 in group 0 are disabled due to a firmware problem. Check with the computer manufacturer for updated firmware."
This would show up for all 8 processorss. Now I search the internet and it was pointed out that disabling speedstep sometimes caused this problem, but if it didn't cause restarts or freezes to ignore it.
I went into the BIOS and enabled speedstep. This seems to have corrected the error above. The BIOS still had all the original OC settings. Upon entering windows it showed that my processor was at 2.79 GHz.
Now my question is this, is the 2.79GHz my lower speed and it will increase back to 3.57GHz under load or do I need to change my overclock specs to something else?
Thanks,
Kevin

It will go back up under load. It only drops down whenever the CPU is idle.

speedstep does just that, it lowers the speed when its idle and when the power is needed it shoots it right back to 3.7

Even if that fixed your issue, you probably need a bit more vcore to avoid freezing issues in the future.

Thanks for the responses. I also turn on the computer today afte the speedstep change and had the it freeze again. This time the error after the critical for rebooting without cleanly shutting down first, was "Audit events have been dropped by the transport. 0".
How much VCore would you suggest? And do you think that would stop the freezing upon startup?

With Vcore, one increment at a time. You really don't want to fry it.

By one increment at a time I assume you mean from 1.35 to 1.36 and so on? Keep increasing until it no longer freezes?

I would call DS and have them walk you thru this, you can fry your chip here and if you do, it won't be covered under warranty.

@Kevin,
You can push it up to 1.45v perfectly fine.
Jump it to 1.40v and see how that performs.

Also try CPU VTT +175mv if that doesn't fix the freezing.

I bumped the VCore up to 1.4v and the CPU VTT to +175mv. Still freezing up right after the starting windows screen. Should I go up to 1.45v?
Any other ideas why it's freezing up?
Thanks,
Kevin

freezing is usually RAM related, or QPI speed related. Can you post more BIOS settings? all voltages QPI multi, RAM multi, CPUz screen shots of all the tabs?
