how are the heating issues with overclocking the q6600?

is air cooled stage 3 sufficient? or would liquid cooling be necessary?

depending on the case id personally say that stage 2 is fine, i got mine to 3160 barely trying (progress was interrupted), and i have stage 2 cooling, with temps around 35 idle, ~51 load
this isnt even mentioning that the case i have is too small for all the parts i have, and the case cooling is barely modified (scythe fans > stock)
either way, liquid is >definatly< not needed to get a solid oc out of it

I'm running a 750i case with what amounts to stage 3 cooling (minor case mod and replacement of default fans) and run at 3.1GHz with a B3 stepping Q6600.

Idle  highest core temp: ~42*C, CPU reading: 36*C.
Load temps after 6+ hours of Prime95 highest core temp reading: 70*C, CPU reading: 64*C.
Under load while gaming highest core temp reading: 50-55*C, CPU reading: 42-45*C.

These temperatures are all well, well within reason. The motherboard and memory you select, are going to have a larger impact on your ability to overclock than the shift to liquid cooling. IMO, liquid cooling is necessary only in extreme cases, and otherwise is an option that may increase performance slightly.

When putting together a budget, you'd be better off putting that $$$ for liquid cooling towards the best case, motherboard and RAM you can afford. Once these things are maxed, if you are still looking for performance increase on your CPU, that would be the time to start thinking about liquid cooling. SLI systems where the air is not expelled from the case would be another time to consider some form of liquid cooling (SLI 8800GT for example, or quad SLI 9800x2's where liquid cooling the CPU is a very good idea).

Power Supply: 750W Corsair HX (Dual SLI Compatible) (Silent Edition)
Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz (1066MHz FSB) (8MB Cache)
Motherboard: nVidia 680i LT Core 2 Quad (nForce 680i LT SLI)

If you are interested in achieving the best possible overclock, the 780i is well, well worth the price over the LT motherboard.

Your Case will make a Difference,,.... Airflow,Airflow,Airflow!!!
As you can see From My Specs,  my CPU speed is cooking along and this is on stage 2 air only!!    my core temp reports are as following

Core 1   42c
Core 2   39c
Core 3   38c
Core 4   39c

These are at idle.. when I go to playing games such as COD4,, I will see temps go to like 45 to 62 under load,,,  your case will be a big factor in OC,, you need to get the heat out..make sure you have good flow of air around where you will put your case at,, you dont want to suck that hot air back in..
I have been lucky too, as I believe I got a good Q6600 that overclocks well even when voltage is at 1.512... it has been stable when playing games for 6 hours

PS.. yes get the 780i MoBo,  as the other poster above said..  its worth it,, or even get the 680i as the 780i is practically identical except for a few things

EDIT TO ADD:   I mean the 680i A1 Rev.. not the Lt version

Extreme Case
Q6600 2.4 OC to 3.38 @ 1.512 v
2 GIG Dominator 800 Mhz
780i MoBO
320 GIG Hardrive
Single nVidia 8800GTX 768
Stage 2 Cooling
Xfi Soundcard
PSU 620
XP Operating System
