Hi guys,
I have a few questions about overclocking a 9800 GT. My other system specs are Quad 9300, 8 gigs RAM and 460W PSU.
1) Someone told me before that my PSU was a little underpowered for my computer. Is OC'ing my GPU for a 10-15% boost a big risk?
2) In Rivatuner you can access the "low-level system settings" under Target adapter or the "system settings" under Driver settings. Which do I use? Both?
Perhaps I should use EVGA Precision instead?
Have a great night.

I'm not sure what you mean. Driver settings are more important than system settings? Do driver setting, then system settings? Also, I have Vista 64.

you are welcome if you click that fan tab, then you will see its pretty much the same deal, make sure you set your fan to run at 80%

2 questions: 1) How much can I OC this GPU within the realm of the reasonable? Default is 600 clock, 900 memory and 30 fan and I got it up to 635/937/60 and saw some improvements in Crysis.
2) If I do in fact cause some strain because of this OC, will it all be to my GPU or is it possible I could harm other parts of my computer as well?

try this:
Core Clock: 738 MHz Shader Clock: 1836 MHz Memory Clock: 2250 MHz and see what your temps are, if you are under 80 you are good to go, over 80 you are getting close to hurting your gpu. |

Is checking my GPU temp in EVGA right after I exit Crysis good enough? Or do I need to check it during Crysis?

My GPU with heavy overclock and heavy fan seems a lot cooler than with no overclock and default fan. Is the temp of the GPU the only big concern here? |

the temps of components are always a concern, in this case we are paying close attention to the GPU cause the GPU is being oced.
run HWMonitor, leave on then play your games for a couple of hours and then lets see what your temps are and what the max temps reached was |

Thanks. I've downloaded this program and I'll see what my temps are with OC after playing for a few hours.
Surprisingly, with no OC my GPU was at 73 celcius after playing Team Fortress 2 for an hour!
Can I basically OC my GPU without fear of damage as long as the temperature remains low?

Hmm, I attempted to play Crysis for a while while recording the temps, but failed
At 690/1030 it froze after 3 min; the screen got splotchy with pink/green. It never did that when I played without an OC so it must be the OC.
I tried 660/990 and it froze up the same way after about 6 or 7 min.
Hmm, I suppose I could play at 630/960 or so without much trouble, but with only minor improvements. I guess I must concede the limits of the 9800 GT.

I'm not sure. Hmm, played without OC for a bit. Min 64, max 82. Value upon quitting was 78. Wow!

put the memory at 1800 and leave the core and shader the value I advised and lets see if it freezes again, put fan at %100

But If it freezes at 660/990, you think it would be ok at 738/1800?
After playing with 630/945 for a while I got no freezing and it was 58 degrees. Perhaps the temp is ok but I dont have a strong enough PSU for heavy OCing?

ok I'm not being clear perhaps.
this is what I'm saying: Core Clock: 738 MHz Shader Clock: 1836 MHz Memory Clock: 1800 MHz are you saying the above config was freezing? |

OK then go back to the last OC you figured out yourself, looks like you are closer to what it should be yourself and congrats, you just got a crash course in OCing your GPU, not that hard is it
Once you find a stable OC that does not freeze, start playing your games and watch the temps if you are under 80c for both temp and max temp then you are good to go. |

To work at a place like DS is my dream job. It really wouldnt be work to me casue I love helping/informing people about all electronics. People always tell me my eyes light up when I give them info. I am far from a noobie but have only gotten in to pc's a few years ago but when it comes to tv's I have the eye for quality and know alot about them. It is a hobby of mine to research tv's. That is why I have the best HDTV on the market right now!! I spent 3 years looking untill I found one that blew me away in picture quality so I bought it Edited by Daygn - 17 Jan 2009 at 6:34pm |
