    Posted: 04 Nov 2008 at 7:49am
I'm thinking about getting a Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 2.66 with a Asus P5Q3. I'm wondering what the longterm effect that overclocking the CPU to (3.2 or 3.4) would have on the processor, the motherboard and other components and whether I should do it if I'm planning on keeping my pc for four years.

I'm also wondering if I choose the option for Digital Storm to overclock my CPU if the computer would still be covered the same under that warranty.

Thanks alot.

I would wait till Nehalem comes out, youd be looking at core i7 920/940, itll OC to a degree and peform better than q9450.

But, you can overclock that cpu to 3.0 for sure (as long as you use non-stock cooling).

And as far as longterm risks.. if you over-volt your CPU youll just decrease its life-span, but this is of any concern with extreme overclocks, so you should be fine.

Yes that is what is so great about DSO. They will overclock your processor and its under warranty!

So if your processor should ever fail and its still under warranty, just call DS up and they will replace it. I have not found any other company that will do this!

wont the core i7's be much more expensive? you have the processor and the from what I've seen all the motherboards are highly priced and then you must get ddr3 ram i thought? I could be wrong to wouldn't be the first time

The Core i7 themselves aren't exactly more expensive than the current Core 2. The X58 and DDR3 is however more expensive than current X48, P45, and DDR2.

As long as you overclock right, there aren't any long term effects.

actually the CPU itself is cheaper, but in all fairness you are comparing the end of life of one CPU and ram to a birth of a new CPU and ram. So ofcourse the one dying is cheaper and new one being born are going to be most expensive but in a few month that will change

I agree with HM.....my rule of thumb is if anything new comes out, give it a year for them to work all the kinks out and then look into buying.

No point in spending all this money only to run into problems..

I hope you realized that every nvidia chipset has always sucked compared to intel's.

DDR2 and DDR3 has nothing to do with gaming performance rofl.

Intel moved to DDR3 because DDR2 could not provide enough bandwidth for the Core i7.

Some people want the extra 20 to 40 fps that i7 provides and some don't.

I love the i7 and can't wait to get it
