Can you just overclock ram as high as you want (keeping stability issues in mind)?  I was wondering what the advantage is of getting 1600mhz ram and then overclocking it.  What would it go to and would it really provide an improvement?
I would be getting an OC'd i7 920 or better with LC on the chip. Does it lower the reliabilty of the ram ( yes I know it would be under warrenty).  If I was to only recieve an improvement of 10fps in my games is it worth stressing the chip and ram.  I play alot of vegas2,  crysis, and so on.  My system now is PD 3.0 with 2gb ram and an 8800gt512 ram so obvously I will see an improvement in gaming.  I have never OC'd before but was wanting to know if for the average gamer on a 19 inch monitor if I would see a difference.

overclocking the ram speed usually only gives you ~1% increase in FPS.

It doesn't decrease the lifespan as long as you aren't retarded and raise the voltage to something crazy like 2.5v and run it 24/7.

It's not really stressing the components when you overclock as most of the components have tons of headroom. You're only stressing it if you are running DDR3 at like 2.1v 24/7 or the CPU at 1.5v 24/7.
The only thing that keeps me wishing on a wishing star.

With the new chip and no more fsb, every bit of ram timing/speed you can get helps, low latency are always welcomed

here are some timing adjustments that Alex posted in another thread to give us an idea how much impact it has

I have read in other posts here that if you OC the chip then you would want to OC the ram to get the most out of it.  If I choose to OC the chip then I would OC the ram and then get LC on the chip.  Cost wise I didn't know if it would be worth spending it there or just no OC with a stock i7 chip and  air cooling ( will get the HAF case which I read has basically stage 2 air already) and spending it elswhere on the config.  Just gathering ideas.  Would like to go for sli  (with 260 or 280 gpu's) but got to keep cost as close to $3000 as possible. I would like to have a top notch rig but am not worried about having the highest fps or score on 3dmark or such.  Just gaming for 3 or more years before upgrades.

well OC the ram is worth it, HAF is basically stage 3, and if you don't OC the CPU then you are at stock speeds, its a shame to miss out on the OC speed, you don't have to LC, you can get decent speeds on air

just some more info to help

Thanks for the feedback.  I think from what I've read here that if I choose to OC then I will also LC.  I also am getting a feeling that DS will give you a stable system first then speed second, which is what I'm primarily looking for.  When I do get it and DS OC's the chip and the ram then I assume that I would have to do nothing and the speed should stay the same with the OC's over time (years)? With my knowledge about computers I want a built system that I don't have to worry about with increased performance.  Looks like this is the place.

OC is nothing but settings in the bios, you can just write them down and save them, then anytime you want you can remove oc by setting bios to default, which is just one step and you can call DS to walk you thru all of that.

Your are right about DS putting stability first then speed

Do you really want to go SLI with a 19" monitor? With that resolution, there would hardly be a noticeable difference between 2 cards and a single card. If you were thinking of switching to a 22"+ monitor later, I could understand, but with a 19" I really don't see the value there.

Regarding the SLI with a 19 inch monitor.....that is what I was wondering if it was overkill or justified for that size of monitor.  Again I just want to play games at high settings, maybe not the highest, and get great performance.  If I can do that with one gpu then so be it, but it's been awhile since I've bought a new computer and they have gotten games so advanced compared to a couple years ago.  Just not sure what is enough and what is wasted money.  I don't see myself getting a bigger monitor anytime soon.

Another question.....if I LC the chip in the HAF case, do I still get the case's stage 3 air from what it comes with?  I wasn't sure if some of the fans where removed to make room for the LC.  I assume that the HAF case has better cooling than the Cosmos case (which I like by the way). I have read that the Cosmos has had troubles with it's touch sensitive power buttons after awhile, but don't know if that is the norm or not.

Lot of us here love the cosmos s but the touch power problems has turned us off a bit, me being one of them but now I like the HAF, since the case comes with all the fans yes you get to keep all the fans
