I really don't know much about overclocking but upon buying Crysis I really want to get some higher settings turned on and have it still be playable.
As you can see in my sig I have a QX6850 @ 3.33ghz which is cooled on stage 3 air. I also have dual 8800 ultras which are just at stock. DS didn't have the GPU overclock option when I made the purchase and didn't really think to call in to see if it could be done.
So, will it be possible for me to oc my ultras? I heard they run cooler than GTXs which make it easier to overclock, but I didn't know if it would be possible on air. I don't even know where to start if I do wind up oc'ing.
I also wonder if I can push my CPU any further...

You can indeed OC your Ultras. Use RivaTuner or a similar program. There are tons of guides on the Net about OC your video cards.
I would not OC your CPU further since the gain is really really minimal if there's any. CPU is not the bottle neck in games, it's the video card. Edited by commast - 03 Dec 2007 at 1:32pm |

I would doubt very much if that CPU were in any way a bottleneck. 3.33GHz x 4 is screamin fast. Seriously, that's a *fast* CPU.
You *could* overclock your GPU's, but why? They are already pushing about as much power as they are going to. Synthetic benchmark boosts aside, overclocking a GPU will probably get you a couple of FPS. Is that really worth it to risk the damage the additional heat could cause your system?
It's your system, but if it were mine, I would just be happy playing that game at the highest enjoyable settings, and when you get tired of it, stick it on a shelf and fire it up in 3 or 4 years with GPU's three times more powerful than your current cards.

Yeah, I really wouldn't recommend overclocking your Ultra's unless you're on water cooling.
If you still want to do it, you absolutely MUST get Everest or another monitor program with GPU temp monitoring capabilities. Don't use nTune.

i have one ultra with OC'ing being done by DSO and i'm on maximum air cooling i can get.. think this will be okay? if worst comes to worst i can hook a Air conditioning unit and ventilate it to the front of my Extreme case which should def keep it cool enough.. any ideas on if i will need to do this or not with one Oc'd ULTRA?

I think I am going to fiddle with it a bit... I understand how to do it and what procedures to follow but the only thing I am worried about is ruining my components. I have the extreme case with the extra fans so I think it has decent air flow. Does anyone know what I should look for to know that if I do overclock if my system is still running stable and not ruining my video cards? Like temperature-wise maybe?

So when exactly did you want to upgrade to a Penryn class CPU?
It's hard to say whether heat or voltage is going to be the limiting factor if you're not too squeamish about life expectancy. What's your Vcore and temps under load look like now at 3.3 GHz?

Ultras are already factory overclocked. It's the same card as the 8800GTX, just factory overclocked. At least this has been my understanding after speaking with Sam at Nvidia. Yeah, we can overclock an Ultra, but we may not get all that much more out of it. They are pretty much clocked to the ceiling as it is.
