Is the 4-4.2GHz OC really necessary over the 3.3-3.9GHz one? I could go with either one of them.

No its not, the 4.0 and above is more for OC enthusiasts / power users.
in games and such above 3.5 - 3.6GHz you won't notice the difference, above 1600 x 1200 res, its very difficult to tell the difference at all in games. Edited by DST4ME - 25 Aug 2009 at 4:51am |

Ya, but how do you know you'll get 3.5-3.6, you might be assigned a lazy engineer and only get 3.33ghz.

its more the chip itself. With a Classified the highest they got my chip was 3.4, but with the EVGA X58 it was 3.33. I seriously doubt that a "lazy engineer" would last long at DS.

I remember a case a couple of months back where a forum member received a system that was overheating at 3.33 it turned out whoever oc'ed his system used an insane 1.4 volts.
Edit: here's the link to that thread: http://www.digitalstormonline.com/forums/forum_posts.asp?TID=7430&KW as you can see in the end he had to re-overclock the system himself and he did a WAAYY better job than whoever built his system. Of course that was just an isolated incident but it goes show that even the best of us are susceptible to indolence. |

That was not the case of engineer at all, we we/him re OCed that PC, we change alot of things like turning HT off and such. that will make a difference.
at the end of the day your OC depends on the chip not the engineer. |

Getting an Oc of less than 3.4 would be kinda disappointing but I could add onto that myself with a little help since I'm not 'the best' OC'er.
