just got my computer and fired up ff14 with it. It's a 3.06 ghz processor oc'd to 3.8ghz. i installed speedfan and get a reading of 39c for my GPU when it's warmed up but it shoots up to 50-51c when i'm playing FF14 and a little fire symbol appear next to it on my speedfan list. Is this normal or am i experiencing some overheating?

Rule of thumb is anything hovering around 80C is abnormal, 90 is bad. Excluding nVidia GTX 4 series cards, however, those just run hot normally.

also, for GPUs, meh, it's usually a lot better to monitor them with a program like MSI Afterburner, or EVGA Precision if you have an EVGA card.

ablah, i'm using a 480, any temps in particular i should be watching out for with this card? sometimes my gpu shoots up to like 65 after a few hours of gaming, i would assume that's normal as well?

heh, that's a pretty weird reading you're getting there....for a standard air cooled card under very very ideal ambient conditions, you'd get around 5...for a 480, you should be reading a lot lot higher...or am I wrong? I think they hover around the 70~80 range idle, right? sorry, haven't had too much experience with them yet, still living in the past gen with double 9600s xD, and not planning to switch back to  nvidia, heh, 6 series is too close around the corner.

65 is downright cold for a 480. It's only once you start getting into the 90's that you should even begin to be concerned and that can usually be fixed by changing the fan profile in a program like MSI Afterburner.

No. My SLI 480's idle in the high 40's (when I had a single 480 it idled in the mid 40's). With my current fan profile (100% at 90, and then 80% at 80, 70% at 70 etc to a min of 45%) I max out in the low 80's when gaming.

I'm thinking about getting two 480's for my DS system, but am also concerned about temps. Sli'd those two boards are sandwiched together, or would be on my Evga 3x Sli.

I watched a video on HardOP where they pushed that configuration and hit temps as high as 96c. Ye gods. I wonder at what point the solder starts melting. Of course they pushed it hard, using Furmark and CPU-z. I've seen Furmark make little girls out of some systems.

I'd be interested to know what temps anyone is getting with dual 480's and a similar setup to mine.

Well, you can always look at my post located right before yours *lol*
Unless you have really high ambient temps (I'm in the mid to low 70's F) your temps should be similar.

Hype and bs...fermis can handle over 100c and unless you are in a sauna, if you adjust then fans properly there will never be a problem

90c+ is nothing to idly dismiss. The cards may be designed to operate at such temperatures, but what about other components in the computer?

I saw your system, JJ, thanks. You're using air cooling and a mid-tower, I've got a full tower with single-loop liquid cooling for the CPU (only). Not evident in my system specs, I guess. I take it the variable fan setting by temp is a feature of MSI Afterburner? Precision doesn't seem to have that capability. Still, if the heat isn't crashing you with a aircooled mid tower, maybe my HAF 932 will handle it okay.

I'm looking at EVGA's version that has the custom backplate on it anyway, which is supposed to lower card temps up to 7 degrees more.

I just want to avoid having to liquid cool the GPU's. I don't know where in the hell I'd put the other set of radiators o.O

90c is nothing to dismiss, but like i said, its bullsh1t, fermis can stress and bench test without going over 80, you just have to set the fan profiles to match your enviornment, like i said
and of course give the case room to exhaust the air

...and your gpu getting to 90 or even 100 would have next to 0 impact on an even half decently cooled system, (maybe 1-3c) they are a closed system, intake from inside the case and blow hot air out the back pci slots
granted high heat can dissapate to some extent, but that is minimal in an air cooled case that makes even a half decent attempt to move air

benchs ive seen from that high air flow backplate show an up to 1c difference :(
if you see a test that shows different, please link.

most people who have bought from DS even semi recently are using 470s and 480s, and i have a 470 myself, and like i said, its hype, furmark, heaven, kombuster, all can done well below 90, assuming you dont live inside an oven
