Hi everyone my computrer is back at DS again (it shut itself down and would not start back up) And since DS has it I was thinking I may upgrade my old Core 2 quad qx9770 extreme. My question is what should I upgrade to (processor and mombo) Should I go with the i7 or the i5 and which model? and what mombo should I ask for? Im thinking towards the asus with the usb 3.0 and the i7 930. I currently have 2 GTX-295 cards which I am keeping til Nvidia releases thier new GPUs. Also will any of the current mombos be compatible with the i9 when that comes out? And I want to keep it under $1000 Thanks everyone. Guy Edited by paraguy1 - 15 Mar 2010 at 3:08pm |

I would go with the i7- 920 and have it overclocked on an evga 3x mobo. It uses socket 1366 which is what the i9 utilizes so you can upgrade to the i9 down the road without swaping your mobo. Just my opinion. See what others have to saybut definatly check out it out.
**EDIT**
You may also want to look into the evga 3x classified if you want to continue to duel weild gpu's because the classified has 16x, 8x, 16x lanes where the reg has 1 16x and 2 8x's. Edited by Muz - 15 Mar 2010 at 3:48pm |

there is no i9, but the 6 core is out, has been out. lol
930 makes zero sense, 920 all the way..but still very small gains over the setup you have now. Edited by justin.kerr - 15 Mar 2010 at 3:50pm |

that not real sata 3.0, anybody can get usb 3.0 support with a usb 3.0 pci card.
don't upgrade now, pg1, you got a good pc, wait another 8 month or so and then upgrade, by that time there should be real sata 3.0 and usb 3.0 mobos. |

for gaming pg1, you are not gonna notice the difference between what you have and the parts you want to upgrade to.
btw why so much for shipping ? I thought DS got a special deal. |

Because I have a wooden crate which DS paid for after my system got damaged in shipping in one of the many times it went back and forth thats why my shipping is so much. And also I guess why I wanted to upgrade is because that machine in its current configuration has never really worked 100% there was always something either freezing, shut offs, internet problems which I know one would say it isnt the computers fault but then again none of my other computers when hooked up to the same internet connection ever have any problems. Its like that machine is cursed. Ya DS did thier best and I have had alot of people look at it and they cant figure out why alot of these problems keep occuring. I paid alot for that machine for gaming and I cant even use it for that because it will either freeze or shut off or disconnect from the game I am playing. Finally the system just shut down and wouldnt start back up. So maybe this time I will get it back and it will work problem free. But it doesnt look like I am going to upgrade after all DS wanted $370 for an i7 920 cpu and $420 for the asus P6X58D mombo. Thats way too much when new egg has the same CPU for $288 and the same mombo for $309. Maybe that extra is for installation I dont know but my budget was only $1000 and I allready spent $250 on shipping. So I guess I am just going to cross my fingers and hope it doesnt have any more problems. Take care DST4me you really seem to know your stuff wish me luck this time.

ya the extra in the price is for installation/testing/warranty. I would not have recommended the asus mobo to you anyways, their tech support sucks.
You take care too and good luck

Well DS just called nice guy talked me out of adding some useless stuff but he was amazed at how many times my machine has been in. DS makes a nice machine anyone reading this my machine is not the norm. Im in a wheelchair and cant service alot of the things one takes for granted so shipping my machine back and forth is like putting it in a box and throwing it around for a few days then expecting to work perfect. I probably should have stuck to an HP or something but I wanted the best and DS customer service is better than any others I ever had to deal with for sure. I guess my point is even though my machine hasnt been 100% I still would recommend DS to anyone but shipping sucks they throw stuff around no matter whats inside Fed ex and UPS.
