Aloha,
I read here in a post that someone partitioned their single HD a WD Raptor 150 gb 50/100 to load Win XP / and games and apps in the other partition. I used to do this on Win98 SE but when it came time to upgrade to XP i was told not to partition the drive or i would take a performance hit due to the fact that XP moves information around on the HD based on the frequency that a certain application is used. Is it better to partition ? Also is Partition Magic still the choice of application or is there something better out in the marketplace ? |

That someone was probably me. Honestly, I not sure of the answer to your question. I split the Raptor just to keep things organized. It didn't even occur to me that there might be performance consequences.
I can imagine two reasons why a file's position on the platter would affect performance. The first is that if frequently used files are closer together, it's quicker to switch back and forth between them. I believe this is the reason XP moves files. The other possible reason would be that bits come off the outside cylinders of the drive faster than the inside cylinders. According to what I just read via Google, this is not the case. So, I don't see any performance issues for the OS and regular applications. Partitioning would affect game performance if the OS was accessing a lot of data on the system partition while the game was trying to read data from the second partition. I doubt this is noticeable, and for me the organizational benefits of partitioning outweigh any possible performance decrease.
I've used Partition Magic when I had too. (The jerks at Micron PC wouldn't partition the drives at the factory.) But that was years ago. DSO partitioned the first Raptor, but charged an exorbitant amount for this service. I don't think it fits with their production procedure. When the first Raptor died, I partitioned the replacement as I installed XP. Edited by Bill the Cat - 15 Oct 2007 at 9:46am |
