I met him many years ago at a charity benefit. He would bring his huge yacht to New Orleans for Jazz Fest. And quietly move around the city. He saw me standing there as he passed(charity event)wearing my Mr. Spock tee shirt under my black jacket. And he stopped,smiled and said he loved it and gave me the "Spock Sign" (live long and prosper). It was a very small encounter with a super nerd and I cherish it.

If only there were a CTRL-ALT-DEL for cancer.

Wow, I had no idea he was even battling cancer. That's a real shame, definitely a loss for the philanthropic community. I didn't follow his work super closely, but he was very well respected within the environmental conservation movement. 

As for cancer, I definitely agree. It looks like Allen died from non-Hodgkin's lymphoma - a disease I'm unfortunately quite familiar with as my father battled it once himself. Fortunately my father survived, but far too many do not.
