I have also heard of people just usiing pantyhose over the fans(the outside without the blades...

I've been wondering about this myself. I have a similar case and live in house with forced air heating/cooling so it is a constant battle with dust.

Well... with any kind of filter you put on your machine, from pantyhose to custom made, its going to restrict air flow. It may not be much but I would watch my temps in the extremes of summer and even during now in the winter. Just to see how much of (if any hopefully none during winter at least) a temp change you get. Plus I would clean them weekly at the least.
