I briefly tried using channel locks but the whole thing started turning so I stopped.

Not at all recommending you do this. In fact, I'd tell you to absolutely to not do it. But I'm just sharing my own story with this problem. I had the same problem with mine. Tried channel locks, elbow grease, everything. Couldn't get the damned thing off, and I turn wrenches as part of my job with positive displacement pumps at a water treatment plant. I suspect when they drained the reservoir for shipping, they use some kind of vacuum suction that effectively seals that cap on making it unable to turn ('airbound'). Fortunately, I had a quick (and most ill-advised dirty fix).. I drilled a hole through the top of the cap, equalizing the pressure. The cap came right off as soon as I did that. Then I took some JB-Weld and sealed the drill-hole I just created, careful that I didn't get any "bubbles" or "smudges" oozing out of the top or bottom of the cap. Then I slapped some layers of duct-tape over that JB-Weld seld for good measure, as soon as it cured. Now I have a lingering issue with the Hydrolux CPU cooling hose fittings getting poor O-Rings that degrade over time and gradually leaking coolant right over my PSU (which has been blanketed by very thin alcohol pads and a few aluminum foil cupcake baking tins to collect the coolant that leaks out). I'm on my second fitting sent by Digital Storm and these O-rings are total garbage. I'd suggest any potential buyers don't even bother with the Hydrolux at all. My 1st DS PC was a liquid loop that is losing liquid after 10 years. So this new one I just got, has the 360 rad in a closed loop for the CPU only No messing with it at all.

All loops, open or closed, loose coolant through permeation. Closed loops last so long that it never becomes an issue. You end up changing the cpu and cooler before the fluid is gone. On open loops, add coolant to keep the reservoir topped off as the level goes down. I always suggest you get extra coolant when new because the formulations might change and the the old coolant will not mix with the new. If out, you will have to drain, flush and refill with new coolant. I have been trending out of open loop liquid cooled computers. AIOs are ok. |

Heh, fair enough. Hydrolux aside, I can't complain much about how DS does actual rigs and overclocking, etc. They're still quite good in that department. Just swapped my DS quick-connection female ends for ones made by Alpha Cool, G 1/4" fittings. Thus far, about an hour in, no leaks for the quick-connects going in/out of the CPU water block. My GPU connections never leaked, so those are standard DS elbow fittings. I was even able to take away the 'protective blanket' of dried up alcohol wipes I laid over the PSU. I kept the cupcake baking tins because they look just so damned cute now (lol). |
