    Posted: 14 Jan 2012 at 7:10pm
So one of the large factors in upgrading for me is picking the right the motherboard that will allow me to bump up to PCI-E 3.0 when the time comes - don't really feel like replacing my motherboard again.

So question: Does the ASUS P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3 (Intel Z68 Chipset) have that capability? I have read in various places - Tom's Hardware, Tiger Direct etc that this board has this capability. I am I wrong?

Does it make more sense to go x79 instead? It makes more sense from a performance to price ratio to stick with the Geforce 570 than bump up the 580 - I am gaming at a 1600x1200 resolution. I would love to do dual monitors - ie both active while gaming - but hasn't been an option up to this point.

Thanks for any and all advice - much appreciated! DANKE!

What would one need pci 3.0 for to begin with? nobody is maxing out pci 2.0 yet.

I believe support for pci 3.0 starts with x79, again not that its needed, IMHO by the time we need it, its time for a pc upgrade anyways.

your config needs lot of changes if you want good reliability and performance and your money's worth.

tom's hardware is full of bs, don't waste your time there.

what is your budget and do you want to game at 2 x 1600x1200? also please post your config number.

No body here is gonna tell you to go with 580 anyways.

My Budget is pretty firm at 2500 - I would love to spend less than that - I spec'd out these components at 1800 but realize that DS will test it etc. This would be my first custom built PC - usually I do this myself- just don't feel like it this time around. I realize PCI-E isn't maxed out - but it will be. So i am thinking future upgrades on my part. Not looking for SLI - and I realize I should bump up my PS to about 850 - modular of course...Not sure I agree with your assessment of Tom's hardware - do you have another reliable resource? What changes do you suggest for my spec? Not really sure what you mean by config number - my Ticket number is 643429
and my build is http://www.digitalstormonline.com/comploadsaved.asp?id=643429 -

Well as I mentioned by the time you need pci-e 3.0 it will be time for a new pc (aka 4 years or so from now if that), there are no new cards coming out that will max out pci-e 2.0 let along 3.0.

as for tom'shardware, its not my assessment, its a fact, most users know they are full bs info, I myself was on there for 2 years till I got tired of fighting all the bs info there, but I just provide the info, you decide what you want to do with it.

better source of info are guru3d, anandtech, driveheaven, tho I'm not saying they are correct 100%, nobody is, but those 3 sites are much much much more creditable/reliable then sites like tom's.

heck if it was not for sites like toms most of us would not need to be here to clear up the bs info, most of it is from toms, unfortunately they are popular with the newer crowd mainly so most people go there first and thus the bs info begins.(not saying you are new or part of the new crowd).

If you dont want sli then 750hx psu is what you want.

if you do want sli then the 1050hx is what you want, unless you want to go with the 850hx which is a great psu also, I don't recommend or ever use the tx or lower model psus from corsair, the hx and ax have a 7 year warranty and proven track record for performance and reliability.

I for much better airflow, less noise, better performance and reliability, I would go with this instead, all you do is add a 1TB BC when prices of hdds come back down to normal:

Here you go Ticket# 643758 --- $2,400 (To see this build click here)

Ask DS specifically for this fan to be added to the top, so you endup with 4 x 200mm fans:

haf 200mm non led fan

Ask for vcore lower then 1.4 for your oc.

if for some reason you still think you want pci 3.0 then we need to go to x79 and that is not gonna be in your budget.
