What do folks recommend for software to measure performance/temps etc.  Free is always preferred btw.

temps you can use HWMonitor and realtemp.

for other things you need benchmark apps but remember benchmark apps don't necessarily represent real life use, but they do help you figure your performance to certain extents, specially if your name happens to be justin

other apps that can give you info on your parts are:

CPU-z

GPUz

It worked, then I tried it again, later
and It didn't work. Not sure why though.

cool thanks, its good when users let us know when its down, sometimes its more then the server and we need to look at it, but most times its just the server going down for a bit.
