Quad or Core duo?

Stage 3 cooling with OC, is it worth it what does it equate if to if I go with the 2.4 quad?

If I get the Value case with an sli motherboard/powersupply and want to add a 2nd 8800(640) after the 9 series comes out, would having Stage 2 cooling be enough temperature wise?

I'm trying to keep it under $1650 since I still have to puchase a keyboard/mouse/printer/speakers.

These are the 2 builds I'm bouncing between.

Quad 2.4 w/ Value case, SLI compatible, Stage 2 cooling

If I changed the case to the Lite and went with stage 1 cooling would I be able to later add a 2nd 640mb and not have to worry about temperature?

Core 2 2.66 w/Lite case, SLI compatible, Stage 2 cooling

Basically the computer is going to be mainly for gaming(CS:S/COD/COD2/COD4/MOH:A/BIOSHOCK/QUAKEWARS/ETC) and after consulting a few friends this rig with either processor should get me to where I want to be since I'll be upgrading from a Dell with a ati x600/intel pent 4 proc.

I'm not that tech savy but after building virtually the same computer on newegg and what not I've come to notice that this is one of the few companies that don't actively try to rip you off price wise and it seems customer service wise as well, so I'll be a proud DS owner soon.

Thanks for any help.

I'll try to answer some of your questions, someone please correct me if I'm wrong with anything. :)

-The general consensus here is the go with the Quad. It can hold its own doing current tasks, and will be put to better use in the future.

-I recall reading that 2.4Ghz Quad will be OC'd up to 3.1Ghz.

-I'm not sure, but the Value cae may be too small to fit two cards in it. It's fine for just one, but that's another thing I believe I remember seeing.

-Most people suggest going with the 320MB version of the 8800 over the 640MB. The performance increase is minimal, and it's $100 you can allocate elsewhere. Or, go with the higher end card, if you can afford it.

I'm not the best with computers either, this is all information I've gathered on the forums, so don't take what I say with 100% certainty. I'm just trying to help out a bit.

Does the memory size play a large factor in playing High Graphic games?

The resolution I'll be playing at is 1024x768 so maybe it would be a smart idea.

The Q6600 will be overclocked to 3.0GHz~.

Quad 2.4ghz > Duo 2.6ghz

Quad 2.4ghz = Duo 3.0ghz (debatable)

Memory only starts to matter when you are running at 1600x1200+ with all the eye candy turned to max.

The 8800 GTS 320MB is on par or better at low resolutions for $100 less.

The GTX is on par or slightly worst then GTS 640MB SLI for $200 less.

8800 GTS 640MB = total waste of money, espicially for such low resolutions when most games don't use more then 320MB.

Or is it possible to have the processor OC'd but the cooling not changed from basic?

You can OC the GPU using various NVIDIA utilities, but we don't do that currently. It is in the works.

< id=NoteCtrl style="DISPLAY: none" id=:5B13805A-8164-11D3-AA48-0000C0D98DCF>Sundowner, I went with the Q600 and had it overclocked to 2.8, with Stage three cooling. (I don't believe the guys at DS are comfortable clocking more than that due to heat issues.) I went with a case that would allow me in the future to add another 8800GTX 763 (SLI). Maybe you should consider adding anothe video card in the future as well? Might save you some money down the road by not having to buy another PC to keep up with the newer more demanding games that will no doubt come in the future. I am also not a PC techie', so maybe the good folks here can correct me if this ain't the best advice.

You're in the right place for considering a new PC (gaming rig). The folks at DS, have been very helpful and polite to me and have always answered all my questions and concerns. Good luck!

unfortunately I would like to see if I can make two changes to my order.

A 8800 320mb instead of the 640mb.

The 850W thermaltake instead of the 750W

*edit* Taken care of.
