Topic: Planning to OC 5850 Posted: 13 Mar 2010 at 1:24am |
Hello! I just bought an awesome computer from digital storm.
Since i consider it as my new toy i would like to overclock my 5850 to and or past the capabilities of a stock 5870.
I will be getting water cooling for this card.
What i would like to know is what programs should i use when overclocking my card and what is the size of toobing digital storm uses? (so i can match my already water cooled cpu)
Thankyou!!!

i'm currently looking at pumps and res for my liquid cooling setup. Now i found this pump/res combo:
the reviews are pretty good, wasnt sure if anyone had any opinions about the pros and cons between a res/pump combo and a separate res and pump set up
thanks again!

My preference is, bay reservoirss are horrible.. pumps inside reservoirs suck.. the swiftech micro res is very good for the price.pump wise this is what I would get for that loop.
I like big reserviors, but it depends on how much room you have.

well if you have room then this is a great res,
you prolly will have to get a smaller version, but get the biggest one you can fit.
single radiator for one 5850? XSPC RX,
with the XSPC RX series get this fan
http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/scge120mmsic.html it is silent, if you PC makes a little noise get the the 1450RPM model, will get a bit better temps
if you can get a dual XSPC RX radiator, with 1150 RPM gentle typhoons, and you will have great temps, even overclocked.
what water block are you going to get?

thats about the worst performing of all of em... EK will get you very good temps, and best voltage reg temps, the swiftech will get best core temps. and decent voltage reg temps.
EK would be my choice. Edited by justin.kerr - 27 May 2010 at 10:21pm |

hahaha good thing i posted on the forums.
Thanks for all the help justin :)
Btw i would like one more opinion on something i just thought of, if you dont mind :)
My computer currently has a liquid cooling setup for the CPU, although it is just a single rad and stock fan.
Would it be worth, instead, to buy the tripple rad version of what you suggested. Then buying the 3 fans and making it a CPU and single GPU loop.
My CPU is currently OC'd at 3.9 (i7 920) and gets idle temps around 43C. Would this single loop:
1) Provide better CPU temps?
2) Still provide good GPU temps and not hinder my ability to overclock it (now that its in the same loop as the CPU)?
3) Allow me to possibly increase my CPU overclock further?
Once again thanks for the input justin!

if possible, can you add the triple radiator, and keep the single? if so I would put the CPU on the triple, and run the GPU off the one you have now.

all of the ones I have done with one triple rad, and 1450 RPM fans will do 4.2Ghz-4.3Ghz. which CPU water block do you have?

unfortunately, i'm currently in palm springs and cannot check. (I got the cpu water blcok from stage 3 liquid cooling from DS, if that means anything)
On a different note
I found this rad which is obviously cheaper but made by the same people:
would there be a big difference between that tripple rad and the higher end tripple one you suggested? I prob would only plan to OC my CPU to 4.1-4.2 max

SWhip, here is a link to my oc'ing thread where Justin was kind enough to post a triple rad comparison done by skinnee labs. I have the gtx360 which needs high cfm fans for best cooling. If you like a quieter running rig, go with either the mcr320 or the xspc rx360. Hope this helps. |

ah i see thanks a ton!
I'm thinking about going for the MCR320
I was looking for the MCR320-S online but i could only find the MCR320 - QP on google.
I'm not sure what the S stands for? But i dont think the MCR320 - QP cant be too different. If not ill just go for the regular MCR320

Wow that site is awesome!
I presume ill go with the MCR320-QP
It says its designed for low rpm fans but i presume having a high rpm fan (1600-2000rpm) would only just further benefit it?

and another side question,
are compression fittings really that much better than regular clamps and worth the extra $$

here is another place to get it. lol
do not go over 1200-1400 RPM for fans, yes performance will be a bit better, but they get very loud after that.
for quiet fans, that perform well on radiators, look at the Scythe Gentle Typhoon in 1150 RPM, if you go higher, I would suggest getting a fan controller so you can turn them down.. but then that is another can of worms. lol

fat boy barbs with a good clamp like the koolance ones, make for a great seal, the compression fittings can be had for about $5.00 a piece, and I do like them better, especially if you have to take the loop apart, but either way is very good, but there are a ton of crappy fittings out there, so just be wary..

ah k i will go with the typhoons then.
Now if i decided to just do one loop instead of two:
Res -> pump -> trip rad -> cpu block -> single rad -> gpu block
Would that still be suitable to overclock my CPU to 4.0 and a bit above while overclocking my 5850 a fair bit? Or would my DeltaTemps be too high

good question, all in one loop, the GPU will raise temps up pretty high..

ah kk
I will take pictures soon and post them to see what you guys can discern about the quality of my current water cooling setup. Mostly the rad since i'm not sure what brand it is.

So that is my setup, pump is obv swiftech. The Rad has no identifiable markings so youll just have to tell from what it looks like i guess. The stage 3 liquid cooling from DS is called "frostchill" if that helps.

any idea on whether or not that single rad would be suitable enough to OC the 5850 a decent bit?

it will cool better than stock, temps should be decent. guessing load temps around 50C depending on ambient.

alright well then the plan will be to create the two loop system
CPU w/ the tripp
GPU w/ the single
ill overclock the GPU, see how much leeway i have with the single rad and upgrade if i have to

question,
justin, would the pump you suggested earlier be good for a water cooling loop running a tripple rad? if i decided to upgrade my GPU loop to a tripple
