I'm used to games not loading without the disk in the drive.  Much to my satisfaction, this does not appear to be the case with my new DS rig; having installed a game, the PC will run it without having the correct disk in my CD/DVD drive.

I'm curious: Is this unexpected benefit attributable to Vista, DS or something else?

if you install the game on your PC with all the resources it needs, then the CD/DVD is not needed.

Some games don't require a CD, most modern games do require a CD for "check disc" validation even if the entire contents have been copied to your hard disk. Steam validates your downloaded games via the Net instead of a CD because; of course, you don't have a CD. Perhaps more games are now relying on Net validation alone, but folks don't seem to like games that "phone home" every time you play them.

Maybe it is a fluke?  For all games that have required disc validation it hasn't made a difference installing on any system, it always asks.

Or are you talking about some of the (usually older) games that if you did a full install you did not need the disc to play?

What game are you referring to?

Is it from the publisher known as Paradox Interactive?  They are a strong believer in the customer doing the right thing.  So once you install the game, you don't need to keep the CD/DVD in the drive and there is no DRM on the game.

You can play any of their games that way.  They have a wide selection of games and have developed a loyal customer base because of their policies.

Much to my surprise, the games that run without disk authentication are major titles from different, major publishers who have risked unpopularity over their draconian security measures in the past.  These games include "Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway" (Ubi), "Mirror's Edge" (EA) and "DCS Black Shark" (ED).  The major exception is "Rainbow Six: Vegas 2", like BIA:HH a Ubisoft-published game but one requiring authentication.  Perhaps because all but R6 have been developed independently, their developers are able to exercise a bit of influence when it comes to unpopular corporate security measures that drive the consumer nuts.

I've read a lot of heated forum debate about disk cracks over the years.  As tiresome as it is to be ejecting and inserting disks to get a game to work, I've never been tempted.  It's using a sledgehammer to kill a fly and can end in tears.
