Please help me finalize my choices. I have been going back and forth between the 920 and 860 and I think I am leaning towards the 860.

Here is my thinking. I want a fast gaming PC that will last 3-4 years. I don’t plan on upgrading to the new 6 core chips that will come out or any other CPU for at least 4 years. I am not going to be overclocking, I will probably upgrade the GPU in 1-2 years but will not be doing SLI or Crossfire. Given this will the 860 be enough to run all of the demanding games (FPS, RPG, flight sims) for the next few years?

- Will I need heatsink with the 860 or will the stock do?

- Should I get the 1TB 32MB  or 500GB 16MB version hard drive?

- Should get the P55 SLI or the FTW motherboard? Not sure if I need all of the FTW features.

Because I know they will ask, what resolution will you be gaming at and will you be getting a new monitor in the future with a higher resolution.  After they know that they can help you better. I can also tell you that they won't think a 1TB will be best for your OS.  Try 2 500MB hard drives, one for OS and one for data storage.  Or 1 500MB for OS and a 1TB for backup. To defrag a 1TB takes a long time especially when it has all of your programs and games on it.

Also please provide your ticket number, that will help them speed up the process.

My two cents.

Thanks for the reminder. I will not go beyond 1600x1200. I went with a 1TB because I heard that the Black Caviar drives were better. I would prefer a 640MB Black but they don't have it.

I guess going to 500MB is okay if I am not going to see much of performance impact.

I don't have the ticket number. I guess I can re-create it once my other questions are answered.

is this a prefab or black ops? letting us know this will better help us help u this way we know what options we have

what will you be using this computer for?

what are your needs?

what is your budget?

in terms of hard drives the more cache you have the more you can do with out turning on your hard drive. doing this you have to wait till it spins to its rpm speed then it has to transfer the data thus slowing it down. the higher the cache the better

This is a prefab configuration. Computer will be used for gaming. see first post.
Budget is about $2K. I could spend more if it is recommended. However, I am wondering if I really need the extra horsepower (CPU * GPU) if the above 860 build would perform in most games if I lowered my resolution a bit?

I guess the 500MB will be enough. The HD will just work a little harder.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I guess I am going to go with the 920.

My concerns were getting a CPU that is slower and needed to be overclocked to get more out of it. I am not technical as you can tell so I have heard negative things about overclocking. I also know that there is a lot of hype and marketing when it comes to CPU & GPU companies. It is just difficult to get the real info.

DST4ME - Thanks for your help again.

1. What internet security and anti-virus would you recommend for online gaming?

2. I am assuming that 750 PSU is more then plenty for future SLI configuration?

3. Will the DS warranty cover any issues including overclocking for the three year?

4. The sales rep. from Micro Center recommended that I get Win. 7 Ultimate 64 bit. Any issues with this versus Professional version?

Thanks.

1. norton imo is better (more expensive tho/ a lil harder to use) McAffee is very user friendly, but the one they offer i believe is only 30 days of coverage.

2 yes it will handel it

3 DS gives you overclock warranty for 3,4,5 years. doing so voids the intel one but ds has you covered.

4 no he is just trying to get a better comission. pro and ult have XP mode

micro center offers cheap stuff yes but i know of two made by them and they are constantly getting repaired for idiot problems. the people who construct them in the ny store are morons and do things half a$$ed. before the computers ran right they each spent an avg of 12 hrs on the road and 3 weeks fixing it (all the trips combined) avoid them

Norton and McAfee just give you a false sense of security.  Their scanning engines are complete crap and simple packers/encryptors can hide a malicious exe from detection.

I would highly recommend Kaspersky and Panda.  Panda offers cloud anti-virus for free, though I haven't tried this out yet.

My pleasure

there is nothing wrong with oc when its done right and DS knows what they are doing, your oced 920 is under warranty and should last you minimum of 8 years.

1. ESET Smart Security, it has a 30 day full free trial, try it first then buy a license after 30 days its fast and light and you will love it, forget mcafee and norton

2. 750w will give you dual sli but not tri sli, for that you will need 1000w psu (corsair)

3. yes warranty covers the whole pc as you get it, so if its oced then its under warranty with the oc.

the sales rep from Micro Center is an idiot,

look here and tell me if you see anything that says you should get ultimate, the only reason I chose pro is because of xp support, otherwise I would have recommended premium.

Thanks. So, far I am very impressed with DS.

One more question. Will DS load all of the latest drivers? Besides MB and GPU are there any other drivers that I should keep an eye out for on regular basis?

actually only gpu drivers are the ones that you want to update, but if you are having smooth gaming and nothing is wrong,I wouldn't even upgrade the gpu drivers for a while.

sometime they can cause problems, some drivers just won't play nice with some people's systems, I think all of us here has had that one time or another, where a gpu driver update just gave bsod or didn't play nice, so we had to go back to the one that was working before it.

and yes DS does load all the drivers.
