I want to build a computer for gaming, mostly WoW, SC2, COD series shooters, Totalwar Series and future similar types of games. I am new to gaming computers and appreciate the advice. I have a significant budget because I have been saving for four years through four deployments.
I don't really know why but I would like to OC and liquid cool. I admit I do not know much, but am especially confused about the GPU cards and SLI and what kind of monitor make the best combination. I am not commited to that Hanns G monitor but I want something between 25-30 inches with a low response time less than 5ms. My total budget is up to 5.5k. I would appreciate any advice. For gaming you want to match power to montor res, so first thing we need to know is the native resolution of your monitor, you don't have one so we will need to settle on that first.
Now, couple of things you need to understand about monitors, response time and contrast ratio are BS numbers to fool the buyers. look for a monitor that has the same Viewing Angle, both vertical and horizontal, and is at or above 170°, this is a sign of a quality panel on a monitor, assuring great picture quality, ips panels for example have the best picture quality, but of course they cost more because of it. so what is the budget for the monitor? |

I would like to keep my total budget around $5,500. So, Maybe 500-750 or so I am a little flexible on that. I do not want a Monitor less than 24 or more than 30 inches. I am considering Dell UltraSharp U2410. is the Dell UltraSharp U3011 worth the significant price increase? I would like to balance it keeping in mind that I would still like a high end machine with some bells and whistles like LC and OC for fun. I hope that makes sense. Thanks for your help!

For a $5K budget, you might want to consider a nice triple monitor setup with NVIDIA's Surround Technology.

I like the idea of the 30inch screen, so lets stick with it. That being said, do you really prefer the Radeon 6970's to the SLI GTX580's? I dont mind the 200$ difference if there is anything to be gained there. I am curious about the benifits of the Maximus IV Extreme. Could you explain that a little please?

Well going with a big monitor like that, I thought I give you the option of tri fire should you need it, tho the p67 platform is not the best one for tri sli, if you are not interested, we can save money by dropping the psu to 1000w corsair and the mobo to deluxe, which can do dual sli/cf easy.
you won't have any real gain from sli 580 over cf 6970, I like the 6970 for the 2GB of ram in the higher res, but the sli 580 will do good also, its your choice. Edited by DST4ME - 11 Mar 2011 at 4:24am |

Thanks, I really appreciate all your help. I wasn't being critical just trying to learn. So the GPUs are pretty much a toss up then and user preference? I had not considered going tri sli, what would be the benifit of that down the road?

From what I have seen with good aa, the 6970 cf beats the 580 sli in 2560 x 1600.
being able to add another gpu down the road brings the benefit of more gpu power should the need be there, but like I said the p67 is not the best platform for that.
