I'm in the process of building a new system. The only area I am stuck on is the video card at the moment. I want to order now to take advantage of the sale going on. I will be upgrading my monitor within 6 months. Currently my resolution is 1680x1050. Does it make sense to order now and wait until the new nvidia cards ship and upgrade with a new monitor? Should I go ahead and order the system with a gtx 285 in it for now as I believe this card should last me the year easily. Any feedback is appreciated. Here is current spec I’m looking at. I wanted something that I have room to upgrade as well. Thanks.

since its only a month or so, I would say wait if you want the fermi, but the ati cards are good also.

for 1900 x 1200 you want either 2 nvidia cards or 5870.

there is very little difference between 275 and 285 and in sli its even smaller, so you either want:

1. 2 x 275, no DX11 support

2. 1 x 5870, has DX11 support

3. wait for fermi.

I would go with option 2 or 3, no sense in getting 2 gpus that don't support dx11.

this system costs less and is much more powerful:

Here you go Ticket# 381785 --- Price: $3209 (To see this build click here) Price after current promotion $3209

I thought about the possibility of 1 x 5870, but all the issues with them I have been reading about has made me reluctant to try ati. I have always used nvidia with almost no problems. Also why the change to the corsair power supply over the enermax 1250. Thanks again for all of your input.

hm..
so many to state the enermax vs corsair
at the end they are about 100 dollar difference, and about the same in performance. even if it stats 1250w, it's amp output is only slightly higher than corsairs.
basically the same, not enough amp difference to justify that gap.

and also, not sure on the 5870 problems I havnt heard all that much actually.
I've had more problems with my GTX280 vs my 4870.
my 8800gtx and 7900gtx all gave me massive problems.

the only time i had problems was with my 4870x2
and ati 3XXX series,

Thanks for the input on the power supply. I want to go with the x58 classified so that when i do decide on a card or future card I have the possibility of 3x sli. Will the corsair be able to handle that in the future. Also this is the problem I was referring to.

Thanks again for all of your help.

ATI has issued a fix for this problem.  Read about it here:

All evil comes from within,
Not from Without,
Therefore, the 1st step on the Holy Warrior path,
Is to recognize thyself as thy 1st enemy.

I had read about the fix previously, but reading the ati forums it appears that after the hotfix some people are still having problems. It would be good to hear from people that have actually not had any problems with their cards or that the hotfix solved the issue for, since it seems the only people that post on those forums are ones still with the issue. Most likely I will wait for fermi and see what happens then. Thanks for the information and the link though.

changed to corsair because you have no need for the 1250w psu, the 1000w corsair can do tri sli/cf easy.

Okay. What about the regular x58 tri sli vs the classified version for tri sli.

classified can do tri sli and 2 other pci cards (sound card, wireless, tv, etc, cards)

classified lanes 1 and 3 are x16 so you get room between first and second card, this is good for managing heat.

3x sli maxes out at tri sli and has room for no other cards.

3x sli lanes 1 and 2 are x16, sticking the first and second card right next to each other, giving higher temps.

I'm however suspecting you will never need more then dual sli of current cards.

only for 2560 x 1600 and crysis would you need tri sli, otherwise dual sli has you covered.
