Been thinking of upgrading from my current GPU EVGA gtx 770 to a possibly 390x or just wait for the RX 480 and or the GTX 1070 which are sounding more appealing.

HOWEVER, I've been hearing about bottleneck(ing) a system which have older components.

So my question is, I have an almost 6 year old (4 months away) system that is still going strong for the games I play and if upgrading the GPU to any of these listed above will affect greatly or how much performance will I be losing or not fully utilizing?

Current System:
i7 920 @ 3.75GHz
Mobo: EVGA x58 LE
6GB DDR3 1600MHz
500GB Velociraptor
PSU: 750W
Windows 7
Dual monitors 1: 20'' 1600x900 60Hz, and 2: 24'' 1920x1080 @ 144Hz (DisplayPort).

Should I just save up more money and build a new system?

the cards are backwards compatible (pcie 2.0) but i think your cpu might hold it back.  you can always buy the card and see how it runs.  if you see your cpu utilization really high and your gpu utilization a lot lower you can bet you're cpu is the bottleneck.  if that's the case, you can update the rest of your system and still use the card once that's done.

You'll be fine. That CPU won't bottle neck you when staying in those resolutions. The GTX 1070 will eat 1080p a live... and anything below it is just a joke. Not to mention, 6 years ago, 1080p was the king while a few enjoyed the 1440p area of love.

You might experience a slight bottle neck, but it won't be anything noticeably bad at all. Now, I will say the GTX 1070 might be "partial" overkill for 1080p. These new gen cards are going to cause 1440p monitors to become the standard.

The AMD might be the better path for pricing, but I will say if you get a GTX 1070... you won't have any problem enjoying Triple AAA games with damn near full maxed settings or completely maxed with minimal to no bottle neck.

Now if you want to stock rocking multiple GPU's, we will start to experience bottlenecking... but for now, you're completely ok.
