Hey,

I'm in the market for a new midrange gaming PC, and not having the where with all or stomach to build my own (if something were to go wrong I'd go crazy), I'm looking at DS as an option.  Anways, does anyone have opinion about these specs?

520W Corsair HX, Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 2.66ghz, nVidia 650i Core 2 Quad, 4GB DDR2 Corsair at 667MHz (Dual Channel), 500GB WEstern Digital (7200 RPM), nVidia GeForce 8800GT 512MB, Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy SE, Windows Home Premium (64-Bit edition), and processor overclock.

I think you hit pretty much every "best bang for the buck" item I can think of. The only thing is the RAM is not going to be the best for OC. I would suggest looking at going to 800MHz RAM. That *should* be good enough to hit some decent overclock numbers. Not  bleeding edge numbers, but decent. Also, don't forget your case choice/cooling options can have a serious impact on system performance. Cool systems run better Smile.

Well, I am on a budget would like to keep the total price under $1700, so no fancy three figure cooling system.  With current settings and odds and ends, bumping up to the 800 would push me over there.  The OC'ing I had planned on was the processor, because of all the possible parts thats the one I'm least likely to replace.  Now, if you're telling me that the 800 RAM will result in noticeable improvements even with out OC'ing it, then I'd consider it.

Alrighty...

A limiting factor when you overclock the CPU is the ram speed.

You are on a budget... you want the most out of your system... I get that.

for your system I would:

Ditch the 4 gigs of 667 and go with 2 gigs of 800 (or 1066)
drop Vista 64 and go with XP

Silverstone TJ-10
INTEL 4790K
16 gigs ddr3
ssd and such
liquid cooled cpu
2080 RTX Super

You don't need 4gb of ram for a mid range gaming machine so get 2gb of 800MHz. You can always add more later when you feel that you need more.

So, RAM speed is that critical?  Right now I'm working on the Witcher where load times are critical and seem RAM dependent, so I really want that extra RAM.  If I am getting good performance for my money, then I'll pay for the 4 gigs at 800 MHz.

You will be fine with 667MHz if you aren't planning on overclocking.

RAM speed is that critical for overclocking the CPU, yes.

If I had gone with 1066 RAM, I could probably run at 3.15GHz overclock on my Q6600 as easily as I can run at 2.92GHz now with 800MHz RAM. Your starting FSB is that much higher- 1333MHz to begin with. To raise the CPU speed, if you want to avoid a bottleneck at the RAM, run 800Mhz or better RAM. Personally, I would get 2GB of 1066 RAM installed over 4 GB of 667MHz or 800MHz, and add more later on if it's really neccesary, but it's your $$$ Wink.
