After a month or so of looking around I finally ordered a system from DS and then started reading these forums afterwards (Doh!!) which gave rise to some questions about my choices. The system is:
Case-950si
MB-790 Ultra
CPU-9850...OC'd and liquid cooled
Memory-2G DDR3 1600..OC'd
GPU-9800 GX2 1G...OC'd
PSU-1000W
OS-Vista Premium 32 bit...Tweaked
Monitor-22" LG
I notice that on quite a few of the system configurations posted here the CPU and RAM are OC'd but the GPU is not. That got me to wondering if OC'ing this card with this set up is necessary or even desirable. Would there be a significant increase in noise and heat as a result?
Would there be any advantage from a gaming standpoint to upgrade to 64 bit Vista and 4gig of RAM?
My goal was to get a system that would last me for a few years so any other comments about this build would be appreciated.
My system is in Stage 2 at present...is it possible to alter the build and to what extent?
Thanks

First, relax.
I believe folks usually don't bother OC'ing the GPU because it results in the smallest performance increase. Are you getting separate coolant loops for the CPU and GPU? I would guess so and wouldn't expect any change in noise level.
The PSU certainly big enough. Everything else look great. Well, except for Vista. I'm not a fan. Other's will jump in and share their experiences. My guess is that if you are going to go Vista, you should go 64-bit unless you've got some known peripheral hardware problem.
Call DSO Monday and chat about all this. It's probably not too late.

Overall id say your system is pretty smoking.
Im not going with OC with my GX2 when i get it because from what ive read, its extremely easy to do yourself, the GX2 has 3 slider bars for the various things to overclock and all you do is slide them to your hearts content trying to find the "sweet" spot.
Some people complain about the GX2s "heat problems" but its only half correct. As you can see in the link ill provide below, while the GX2 does run alarmingly hot when its idle...you notice under load...it actually stays fairly cool considering its 2 cards smushed together. So in retrospec your rig will probably run hotter then normal, but it wont completely bake under load.
About your powersupply its more then enough for what you have now, Ive talked to 2 DS people and both said 1000W is more then enough for running 2 GX2s should i want to upgrade later. Granted i was just using a 780 and 4GB of 1066 ram, i dont know how much of a difference that would make to power load.

Thanks all for the responses and information. As long as my cats don't decide to sleep on the vents the heat shouldn't be too much of an issue I hope. Not sure what you mean by coolant loops Bill. Only the CPU will be liquid cooled. And I'm kind of leary of Vista myself but getting a DX 10 card made me take the plunge. Sometimes I actually long for the simple days of DOS. Yeah, me too, until I recall DOS Shell.
Loops refer to a connection from the radiator to the water block and back. This forms a circuit or loop for the coolant. "Separate loops" means two distinct cooling systems, one for the CPU, and one for the GPU. The other method is a "Single Loop" where both devices share coolant and radiator(s). In your case, "single loop, cpu only" would apply. |

I called DS up on Tuesday and thanks to Josh was able to modify my system to where I feel more comfortable. (probably could have been better but I can get pig headed about stuff at times) At any rate I got rid of the 2 raptors I had set up in RAID and opted for 1 raptor with a 500G on the side.
Changed my 9800gx2 to 2 9800's in SLI...originally I was only going to get 1 9800 as I was told this would be enough but this is where my pig headedness comes in.(besides, Josh was saving me money so I may as well spend it
4G RAM @ 1600...decided to go with the 64bit Vista so figured 4G was the way to go.
Only the CPU will be OC'd as this will allow the FSB to match up with the RAM speed. OC'ing for the GPU's isn't availabe yet.
Now all that's left is the waiting. At stage 3. Wonder if I hired a couple of the Laker Girls to come over and cheer them on it would go faster.
And DS...how about some toll free love for Canada. We're people too..even if we do talk funny.

I am thinking if you send Laker Girls over to DSO, *no one* will see anything come out of there until the cheerleaders exit the building.
