Hello DS community!
After window shopping around at different companies for a custom built pc, I have finally decided to choose DS mainly because of the customer service and community. So here I've built a potential lumos build for myself and would like some feedback on improvements or cutting costs without sacrificing too much performance. Budget: $5,000 - $6000 Expectations: To be able to run 4k resolutions, 3x 24" monitors (not included in budget) at 144hz, VR Ready, and be a solid build 10 years from now. (Current PC is an ASUS ROG laptop bought 10 years ago from Best Buy and it's finally on its last legs of life.) Usage: Primarily high end gaming, light digital 3D rendering/video & photo editing. Special Needs: I like RGB colors. Wifi is primarily used because hard wiring it to the router would be a chore. Should I upgrade the wifi for better range and speed or stick with the onboard wifi the motherboard offers? Welcome to the DS forum TannerT!
Looks like a strong Lumos build to me sir, and I also like running with 3 x 24” monitors too. The RTX 2080 Ti should be excellent. For your stated budget range, I might suggest you boost the M.2 NVMe Drive 1 to a 1TB Samsung and maybe make use of the second M.2 slot for another fast NVMe Drive 2.....but it’s absolutely fine as is. If you have to use WI-FI, the on board WI-FI solution should get the job done. Wired net access is always fastest and most dependable if at all possible. If you just prefer Soundblaster sound boards then go for it, but the onboard 8 channel (Realtek) sound codecs on Asus motherboards are really very good. Realtek does update sound drivers and make improvements. Sound boards are becoming a rare add on because on board audio has gotten so good now. |

You have several hundred dollars invested in overkill RAM and power supply. Your rig would have plenty of overhead at 850W, but even the 1000W would save considerably. You have stated no reason to need 64 GB of ram, and the jump from 32 to 64GB is really expensive for next to no benefit. Agree about the sound card.
You get to spend your money anyway you'd like, but my advice is to save yourself nearly a grand on unneeded parts you'll never even know are there. |
