Hey, got my DS machine several years ago now and honestly I'd love to get a new one and get into VR gaming but I just started Medical School so I need to put that off for another couple years yet.
In any case, I've recently started having issues where my computer turns itself off randomly and reboots itself into a black screen telling me ASUS detected power surges and shut down. There have been two changes to my setup recently: 1- We bought a house and moved, but all my cards and things got re-seated afterward, my machine has a (small, but functional) surge protector on it, and the wife's computer hasn't had issues with power flow. 2- I upgraded from Win 7 to Win 10. Not sure if this would do anything to the power draw, I've checked my BIOS and it doesn't seem to have changed, but I rest it just in case. As tinkering with those two things hasn't changed the problem in any way, I'm thinking the power supply itself might not be keeping up, or it might just be aging and need a replacement. Does Windows 10 somehow draw more power than Windows 7? Is 7 years just too long for a power supply? Or is there some sort of easy fix I'm missing that doesn't involve buying a new power supply? Thanks guys! Here is my setup currently, after memory and graphics updates since 2011: System Configuration: Chassis Model: Cooler Master Storm Enforcer Processor: Intel Core i5 2300 2.80GHz (Quad Core) Motherboard: ASUS P8P67 (Intel P67 Chipset) (New B3 Revision) (Does Not Support SLI) System Memory: PNY XLR8 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR3 2133MHz Power Supply: 800W Corsair GS (Dual SLI Compatible) Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 1x (500GB Western Digital Caviar (7200 RPM) (16MB Cache) Optical Drive 1: DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 24x / CD-Writer 48x) Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Video Card(s): Sapphire Radeon NITRO+ RX 470 8GB GDDR5 Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio Extreme Cooling: H20: Stage 2: Asetek Liquid CPU Cooler (120mm Radiator) Chassis Airflow: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: Internal Chassis Lighting System (Red) CPU Boost: FREE: Overclock the processor between 3.3GHz to 3.9GHz Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 10 (64-Bit Edition) |

The Asus power surge message is really the motherboard detecting a flaky voltage. Not usually a surge as we know it. A bad mobo can cause it. Some have gone into Bios and disabled the Anti surge feature and that fixed it. It could just be a mobo being too picky. You'll have to hunt for it or look in the Asus manual. Try this first.....Plug the pc directly into a wall outlet..no surge protector, temporarily to see if it helps. This has helped a lot of people. Surge protectors can mess with a power supply. Re-seat the 24 pin and 8 pin connectors from psu to the motherboard. Don't remember if that psu is modular. If it is, then unplug the same cables and re seat at the psu itself. Win 10 should have no impact. ![]() |
