What is the real difference between a 550W and say a 620W power supply, or even more? I don't really know which one to get, please help!

A very basic calculator, it should give you a generalized area to look for in what youre going to get power supply wise.

the real difference is how much power they are capable of pumping out, and your choice should be affected directly by how much power your components need. sunfighter's link is the easiest way of choosing i know of.

PSU Calculator Lite
When calculating for a PSU, I try to ensure the maximum system power draw will not exceed 75% of the PSU's rating. This should keep you within the PSU's highest efficiency range, and will help to ensure loner life from your power supply. |

my power supply is a loner too. I suppose you want that though, cause having groups of them together will probably kill your power bill. P.S your calculator is hard Edited by SunfighterLC - 22 Mar 2008 at 10:46am |

I was concerned about this too, and I did my calculations with the PSU Calculator Lite that Tyler recommended above and came up with a different number than the newegg calculator. I also selected quite a few more cards/devices/drives than I currently have on my order. In spite of all that, it still gave me a relatively low recommendation of 304 watts. Then, calculating a peak performance level of 75% (again, as per Tyler's recommendation), I still end up right around a 400 watt PS, so it seems that the 550 I picked for my 750Si/650i/E8400/2GB1066MHz/9600GT/dual HD/dual OD system is more than enough.
I have to say, I'm digging this forum! Edited by Mifunego - 25 Mar 2008 at 6:48pm |
