How much of a benfit would i get from going from this:
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.00GHz (1333MHz Front Side Bus) (6MB Cache)
to this:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz (1066MHz FSB) (8MB Cache)
Are there many games and applications that can utilize the quad better than a duo?
And please, "A whole bunch!" dosn't really help me.

Most games only use two fully. If you alt tab a lot or multi task, a quad is better.

So for only $44 more the quad would be the way to go I'm guessing.

It is more a matter of how forward looking you are. If you are concerned with gaming, there are almost no games that benefit from 4 cores. Also consider that the cpu isn't usually the bottleneck in a gaming rig (more money into the gpu would be better).
By the time everything is efficiently multithreaded, the current generation of hardware will be obsolete, and we may be up to 6 or 8 cores. The real advantage of running the quad core is similar to running 2 cores early on. What if you want to run 2 multithreaded applications? For example, if the virus scan takes 2 cores, and the game takes 2 cores, the quad would let you do both at once without performance loss. |

Chocolate or Vanilla, Vista or XP, dual core or quad? Personally, I think you're better off with a significantly faster dual core CPU...., for now. Many others would disagree. The truth is both are fast enough.

Right now more Mhz are more useful in gaming than more cores.
