OK,so you might have seen the pics of the new BullyRig.
Given that I don't know what I am doing, i have successfully added my programs that I have disc for and all of my 95 Gb of image files. Now I am trying to get Programs that I don't have disc for transferred from the Dell to the BullyRig. I 'Selected' the folders from the Dell Program File list and copied them to an External Hard Drive. Then I pasted them into the "C" drive of the BullyRig. They are there. But when I open one it shows me all of the subfiles and doesn't 'RUN". When I look at my BullyRig Program list it doesn't have any of these disc-less programs. So I probably needed to past these Program Files somewhere else?? Or do I have to go back to each provider for a new Program? Dell OS is XP. BullyRig is Windows 7. The BullyRig runs great but the guy at the controls |

Bully its more complicated then that.
when you install a program, that program installes files not only in the program folder but also in document and windows folders. it also adds registry keys to the registry so that windows knows the locations of these new files. in short you can't move programs from one pc to another, there are very few apps and games that don't have regkeys and have a files only in one directory, those you can move but there is very few apps and games like that. in short you can't move the program folder from one pc to another, it will not work. on top of that a 64bit os has a different folder structure then a 32bit so that makes it ever more complicated. now did you paste the whole program folder in the new rig or did you copy and paste the files? Well if he has the the folder he could just run the .exe and it should work, however it would not be advisable as the system would not know of it's existence since it's not in the registry.

No that is not true, like I said there are very few apps that work like that, most apps themselves use registry keys to find location of other files needed.
there are very few apps that will run by just running the exe, those apps don't use regkeys which is why they are able to run like that. regkeys help both the os and app. with most apps if you try to run just the exe on the new system it will give you a quick open and close of dos like window, or it will just simply give you an error and not run. for example, opera browser, you can move it from a 32bit to a 32bit just by copying and pasting, but try moving it from 32bit to 64bit and it won't work. now try and do the same with your firewall or av and you will see that it won't run no matter what, in any os.
