Hi everyone,

I been customizing systems online here for nearly 6 months I'd bet. And as my purchase date approaches (Aug 15th +-), I want to start putting my configurations on the forum to get some feedback.

Before I post them, let me just give some info about how I will be using the machine, and what my expectations are.

#1 - This is purely a gaming machine. For work and day-to-day things I use a MBPro and a Thinkpad Ubuntu.

#2 - This gaming rig will be hooked up to my 23" Apple LCD; native res @ 1920x1200.

#3 - I won't be needing gobs of space on the gaming rig - I've got plenty of external space for torrents. = ]

#4 - I want to be able to play games like; Stalker-ClearSky, Fallout3, Left for Dead, Aliens and likewise as maxed out as I can (within my price).

#5 - I'm willing to spend upwards of 3.5K - but if I can get a rig I'll be happy with for 3K or less, that's great. If I have to nudge a bit over 3.5K, I might consider it.

#6 - The reason that you will see raid1 on many of rigs is that I won't be doing backups of this box. So, I'd like to have zero downtime in the case of a dead HD. If people think I'll have a performance hit, I'd consider bumping up to 2x 10K HDs.

Here's some rigs I've configured.

http://www.digitalstormonline.com/comploadsaved.asp?id=162019
http://www.digitalstormonline.com/comploadsaved.asp?id=161948

One debate I'm still having is if I need 64b Vista or not.
Also, I don't like messing with windows, so I was thinking of having digital storm do all the tweaking, along w/overclock of the CPU, GPU and memory.

Well, I know that's a lot to digest, so a big thanks to everyone that helps with this decision!

Hey thanks,

I was thinking the BB software would create links from them. My bad.

Still a while to go and a lot of price drops and the introduction of the 4870X2 will happen before your purchase date..

Definitely get a quad core but stay away from the Extreme chips...

I'd suggest 4GB of ram since a lot of newer games such as Age of Conan and Crysis are massive memory whores.

I'd also look into CrossfireX or SLI config for a 1900x1200 resolution. Some games such as Crysis will be quite demanding on a single card at that resolution.
The only thing that keeps me wishing on a wishing star.

i wouldnt consider raid for a gaming only system
definatly stage 3 air for any overclocking
if youre going over 2.6k you might as well get DDR3
defiantly get vista 64

I agree with !ender on a raid 1 stripe for gaming...just personally doesnt make sense to me.

Other than that your last configuration looks smoking but your also 800 dollars above your starting budget.

You have over a month as Sky said so give it time, prices will fall a bit, specificly the video cards and if your lucky the DDR3 ram might drop a bit.

If your logic for going RAID 1 is fear of a drive failure, remember that the raptors already are more reliable than the average HDD. If you want further reliability, go with the velociraptor. For the best reliability and performance, go with SSD. They're expensive now, but prices will drop, and the MTBF for an SDD is an order of magnitude longer than that of even the best HDD. Barring fire or other disaster, you can safely say that an SSD will last you a lifetime.

Soon, both SSD and graphics cards will go down in price and you may find a primo rig well within your price range.

Good points by all - Sure, I'm aware prices will come down in the next month, so maybe I can get my dream rig for a bit cheaper.

Also, I suppose I could consolidate the two HDs and get one velociraptor, and just do backups of my saved games to a external drive. That way, I'm cool in the event of failure.

I'll also do a little research into SSD and maybe consider that. Are the SSD speeds that much > that of 10k raptors?

Thanks again all,

- sk

Note: I'm going to set my high limit at 4K for a dream rig. So, if I can squeeze in what I want, by aug, into a 4k price (or under of course), I'll probably do that.

So, I'm going to pose another questions: If you had 4k, what would you get? I'm interested in seeing some configs. Also, keep in mind that I have basically zero windows knowledge when it comes to tuning vista, so I would probably want DS to tune the system, along with over-clocking my hardware.

4k shopping spree

honestly though, i feel like you would be better off swapping out those 2 HDDS for a single 500GB drive. the performance difference may be something that will shine in benchmark tests, but realistically youd be saving almost 500 bucks if you went to that single drive and the real life differences would be slim to none.. thats a lot of games, a monitor, a new mouse, mousepad, keyboard, some movies, and some gas to get it all

side note, anyone would be wasting time putitng something together more than 30 days before you plan to buy, i mean yea its good to get a grip on what you want, but the industry changes so often that you're best bet will be just read around and then when you get to about 10-15 days till purchase date, start this thread over

If you got the time to wait which you do this is what ide do with 4k. Four Grand

When they come out Ide swap the HD4870's for 2 HD4870x2

From my reading im not sold on the DDR3 anyhow and The Rampage in my personal opinion (from reading because I havnt had the chance to play with mine) is a better motherboard.

!ender - I liked your config. I made a minor tweak by dropping the second HD (I have plenty of external space), which brought the price in the 3.8K range.

Here's that config: http://www.digitalstormonline.com/comploadsaved.asp?id=164289

Bismark - I liked your config as well, except I'm not sold on the video cards - I've never had ATI and I don't follow them. I did like your idea about the SSD though.

As far as waiting, yeah, I will have to restart this thread when I goto order, but I'm basically getting familiar with where technology is right now, and that makes it easier to jump into configuring the machines in a month. I'll be closely watching DS's site, along with reading all my gaming and tech magazines.

So, I've decided that 4K is my limit. = ]

Thanks again,

- sk

Here's one for 4.1K

Sweet setup I think, but I know the price will come down in the next month and maybe be attainable for 4K.

I actually Agree with you on ATI, Ive never owned one either and I'm taking a chance this time around. Was an Nvidia fan my whole life but I wanted to take advantage of the Rampage board which I think will be a quality product, and it doesnt support SLI. Also folks keep saying the HD4870x2 will have more power than a GTX 280. Not trying to talk you into anything though, thats a feeling in your heart...I'm still sceptical on ATI, but before you buy I'll have my rig and let you know how they work out for me,

My first graphic card was an ATI rage fury, it wasnt too bad really. Id say the best thing to do with a build that far into the future is just get the basics down, AKA what case you want, what powersupply, and what extras you want like overclocking.

Then just continue to do research on CPU, and GPUs, because chances are really good there will be different ones out in that month.
