I bought a rig from DS about 3 years ago and it is still running strong. The problem is it is just running border line with all these new games out on the market.I have upgraded the video card to a GTX 470 and upped the ram to 800Mhz.Was just wondering if i should overclock it a bit to get allittle out of it since i don't have the money for a new rig just yet.I have the 680i LT board in it and it has a freezer pro cooler on it.I was thinking of trying to get it up to 3.0Ghz.I talked with a rep from DS and he said i could only go to probably 2.8Ghz. What if i gut the case i have to a CoolerMaster Elite 430(better Air Flow) and run a Corsair A70 cooler on it? Will it be possible to get it to 3.0 ? What is the best option for me besides buying a new box which believe me i would love to.(My father just purchased the ODE rig and it is sweeeeet).Any help would be great.Thx Specs:
EVGA 680i Lt Motherboard
Freezer Pro Cooler
PNY 800Mhz Mem
Corsair HX 650 PSU
EVGA GTX470 Fermi Video
SB X-Fi Gamer Sound

You need pci 2.0 you don't have it, I'm not sure if that 470 can give you all it has without 2.0.
3.9 is pretty high for that cpu Edited by DST4ME - 10 Dec 2011 at 5:52am |

No, 3.0Ghz is what i am trying to achive with the cpu.The video card i will leave stock. People say that cpu should overclock to 3.0Ghz with no problems.I just thought with better case flow and cpu cooler it would
be able to get to that.

In that case follow the link I posted in it there is a link for ocing it and walk thru guide.
Also if I'm not mistaken, you need faster speed ram, if I recall correctly, your ram caps you at 3.6Ghz. Edited by DST4ME - 10 Dec 2011 at 9:17am |

So i guess my question is,is it worth it to overclock this thing? If my ram caps me at 3.6 i surely should be able to get it to 3.0 right? I've never overclocked before so i am just wondering if it is really worth it.

Oh so you are at stock 2.4GHz and want to get to 2.9? it will help a bit, but not too much in games tho. IF you have never done it, let DS walk you thru.

Yes i am stock speeds at the moment.I have decided to build my own box this time and give my old DS system to my son.I am basically using DS configuration as a guide line. This is what i am building.
CoolerMaster Elite 430 Case Asus P8Z68 V LE Motherboard i5 2500k [email protected] Corsair A70 Cooler Corsair Vengeance Memory (8 Gig ) GTX 570HD 1.2Gig Video card 1st Drive( OCZ SSD 120Gig- 2nd Drive( Western Digital 250Gig Corsair HX 750W PSU Thanks for the reply's DST4ME.I guess i'll just leave my old DS box stock and move on to the next biggest thing, lol.I would have had DS build my box for me but i wanted the same config that my father has(ODE build) except in a CoolerMaster Elite430 case. The problem with that is the price jumps from $1500(ODE) to $1800(CoolerMaster Elite 430) with a lesser processor and the case alone is over a $100 dollars less.Guess i dont get their pricing. |

I would not recommend that build to you at all.
if you care about future preformance go with 2600k go with haf 922 for case. don't go with le mobo, go with z68 pro v. for ram you want to go with low profile ram. don't get the hd version of 570 bad idea, get teh regular version. don't go with ocz ssd. psu is a good one tho ![]() Edited by DST4ME - 12 Dec 2011 at 10:58am |

Well the reason i went with the 2500k is that they say stock its just as fast as the 2600k for a $100 less. I don't really care about hyperthreading because i do no video editing it's just mainly a gaming box.Case i have to go with because i have a real nice computer hutch and the 430 Elite will fit nicely in there so i am kinda stuck there. What SSD drive do you suggest? And as far as video goes i may just go with a GTX 570 Fermi. The only thing i liked about the GTX 570 HD is the power connectors run out the back side of the card.

when you looking at cpu, don't just look at "what they say" or test benches that have nothing to do with our pc environment, test benches test one app/game at a time, we have multiple stuff running, also win7 supports ht, with 2500k you won't be taking advantage of that, also don't just go by how its doing today, you want to own the pc for the next 3 to 5 years, so think about how it will feel then, with apps/games moving toward multi core/thread support, the 2600k will feel more powerful in the future than the 2500k. Also win7 itself uses HT, with 2500k you will be missing out on that.
as I mentioned the hd 570 is a horrible idea wiht load temps issues. for ssd we like the 320, c300 and m4 check out the haf 922 it should be around the same size but a much better case with much better airflow. Edited by DST4ME - 13 Dec 2011 at 9:26am |
