Q9300 bottleneck for 4870 X2 or GTX 295?

Hi,
 
I have a Q9300 at 2.5 ghz at stock and have heard that it would be a bottleneck to one of the aforementioned GPUs. I don't understand what this means exactly. Does this mean that 1) I will be getting maximum or very good graphics performance but merely OK CPU performance, or does it mean that 2) my CPU will actually prevent my GPU from working to its potential and hence it makes no sense to get such a strong GPU?
 
In the second case, does this mean the most graphics performance I can get is from a lesser card like a 4870 or GTX 260?

not really, what is your GPU now and what resolution are you gaming at?

I have a 9800 GT and at 1440 x 900. Most games run maxed at good framerates.
 
I am of course disappointed that I cannot play Crysis at high with a good FPS. Not that it's my favourite game by any means. And with GTA4 I cannot even play above medium whatsoever. With some games I get a bit of stuttering.

you should see improvement with a 260+ or a 285.

The 295 and 4870x2 are dual cards mainly build to handle resolution of 1600 x 1050 and higher, to your resolution they will not make much of a difference.

GTA is a Vmemory hog, you wont even get past medium with a 1GB card unless you play at a low resolution.
 
I know for a fact you cant run high textures at 1900x1200 with a 1GB card.
