My new DS rig (which I'm quite happy with) has an i7 950 quad core cpu (o.c'd. to 3.9 GHz.) running on an EVGA X58 SLI 3 mobo.
I'm curious about how the cpu allocates its core recources to the various demands on it. I'm looking for a layman's explanation, not digital doublespeak. I have a game, Trainz 2010, which, it is claimed, can utilize 2 cores. It will be installed on my 80 gig Intel ssd, which also holds the Win7 64 O.S. How does the system allocate gpu core usage? Will Trainz be sole owner of 2 cores and the O.S the other? Please clarify,

your quad core has hyper threading, so it will run 8 threads.
If your game will use 2 Threads. that still leave 6 threads vacant, for use by other apps.
Windows 7 does a pretty good job of leveling out the CPU load, and spreading it among the cores/threads.
