So when I first started getting my configuration together, I was planning on going with dual cores thinking that quad cores would just be overkill. But after looking at the many people asking for opinions on their configurations, it seems there's practically NO ONE getting dual cores, but rather, quad cores every time. I'm thinking that if so many are going with quad cores, there must be something I'm missing. Whether it's longevity, processing speed, etc, I'm not really sure. Anyone care to explain the major benefits of quad cores over dual cores for me? Thanks.

While Dual Cores are great and they OC very well, Quad Cores are the future. Most people are buying Quad Cores so that they can be ready for the future. Only a few applications/games utilize Quad Cores right now, but they are being developed and soon all programs/games will support Quads. If you buy a Dual right now, you will be good for maybe another year but then you will have to upgrade to a Quad.

Better off just getting a Quad now.

That's what I expected. Looks like if I'm going to make mine last, I should probably go with the quad cores. Thanks for the info.

the i7 cpu has shown to have 20fps gains or higher vs the dual core cpu.
