I know this has been discussed here before (and I did see the Tom's Hardware post), but I was wanting a little more info/opinions about the Intel Quad processors vs. the Duo's. In particular, I am referring to the E6850 vs. the Quad Q6600. I went throughout the entire performance chart (Tom's) and it seems the E6850 out performs the Q6600, especially on FPS (which is my focus). But that said, I have seen where some folks believe that in the future the Quad Processors will outperform the Duo's in FPS and performance. What I would like, are some opinions on this issue. I will be purchasing my DS Twister Pro this weekend sometime and I would really like some feedback. I should have done this a week ago. Me, the procrastinator. I guess I'm leaning toward the E6850. What are your thoughts?

If the apps weren't designed to use four cores then the E6850 would be the better choice.

Apps and games that are designed to use all four cores will perform better on the Q6600. Games like Crysis, Unreal Tournament 3, Alan Wake.... Applications like Photoshop, Sony Vegas, Winrar....

It just depends on what you will be doing and if you plan on upgrading in the future.

Quad cores will take over, just like how Duo took over a couple years ago =)

Thank you for your reply. This is gonna be my rig. I'm going with the 850 PS because I'm thinkin' prices will drop in the future on the 8800GTX's (768), and my rig will be able to drive two video cards. Guess I'll be going with the Q6600 (though I'm still torn between the Q660 and the E6850) Is it true that the new games like Crysis will utilize the Quad processors? I thought the Quad's were geared to be mostly for multitasking? I’m also going for the Stage Three Cooling with overclocking upgrade. Will this drive the Q6600 2.44 GHz to 3.0 GHz?

Gonna take the plunge tomorrow. . . .

Oh poop, it defaulted to the generic Twister Pro. Here's my rig I'm gonna build:

850 PS
Q6600
nVidia 680i 2 Core 2 Quad
2 GB DDR2 Corsair at 667 MHz (Dual Channel)
nVidia 8800 GTX 768
Air Cooled Stage 3 (twister Boost Overclocked)

I am not sure if they will automatically overclock your processor. To be safe, you should call them or put it in the comments.

Yep, Crysis is going to use all four cores. If you have any questions about upcoming games, please ask =).

Future games I'm interested in. Do you think they utlilize the Quad processor as well? So many good games coming out this fall, I wanna be ready! :-)

Call of Duty 4
Medal of Honor: Airborn
F.E.A.R. (Perseus Mandate)
Pain Killer : Overdose

Next, I will need to upgrade my 17 inch monitor. I'm looking at the Samsung 226BW (about 350 bucks). Its the 22 inch wide LCD with a 5 ms refresh rate. My next noob question: Will the wide screen format stretch out and distort images? I'm sure those games with widescreen options will compensate for that. But what about older games (i.e., Doom 3, etc.)?

Doom 3 has an option to customize the resolution. Older games will just play in 4:3 and leave a black line on the right/left side of the screen.

MoH: Airbone will utilize all four cores.

Not sure about the other three. Don't think they will.

I wouldn't get that monitor.  I mean, the best monitors are the highest contrast ratios, and this monitor is only 700:1.

I would go with at least 1200:1 ratio

Contrast is actually 1000:1 on it and that's fine for anything you do on the computer.

No monitor under $1000 has a contrast ratio of over 1000:1. You will be better off spending that sort of money on a HDTV with a contrast ratio of 2000:1.

If you're concerned about the contrast and brightness. Go to the store and compare a 30" 1000:1 and a 30" 2000:1 and see if you can tell the difference between quality.

I just got home and hung my 226BW Samsung 22". ( I had my 17" wall hung too.) I don't know if my brain can get used to so much viewing area. Gonna go and play some games and see what happens?

My monitor is 1200:1 and I got it for 199.  I am picking up a 3000:1 monitor on tuesday for 259.
Not sure where you shop, but maybe you should branch out a little.

Oh, and for the record, the monitor you recommended is 700:1.  Read the specs.

I run a Samsung Syncmaster 204B and it looks and plays great.  I have not had any problems at all with it.  Games are great and movies even look good.

The specs for that monitor are different on every website. Even Samsung's own website has different specs.

You can't compare contrast or say if the monitor is good by looking at spec sheets. You have to see for yourself in stores.

Every manufacturer doesn't use the same method for measuring contrast.

Many manufacturers also advertise the dynamic contrast instead of the static. Higher numbers sell so much better.

And I am talking about static while you are talking about dynamic. The monitor I suggested has a 3000:1 dynamic contrast ratio.

and note: Most people can't see above 1000:1 unless the room is fully darkened.

Guys I need some help here with this monitor (22" Samsung). It is beautiful and it is really great seeing SO much more than on my 17", but my team mates and enemys (and other things) look kinda cruched. I feared this would be the case. I've tried playing an all the settings available for the games (COD/MOH/FEAR, etc.), but it still looks like the images are being stretched. I'm gonna wait till' my new DS rig gets here and then see if that may help (I can play on higher settings then). But I have this sinking feeling that I'm gonna wind up with a 19" samsung down thew road. And that's a pity.

Ok, I got this thing figured out. If you have a game that will match the wide screen monitor's resolution, then its no longer wide screen for that game. It’s just a really big window that shows you everything and completely fills the screen. If your game has less than what your monitor is set at, then your images will seem a little squashed. I found many of my old games titles have the 1680x1050 resolution, and those games perfectly fill the screen with all images sized proportionately. I have a few games that play right under that setting and I can hardly see any "squashing". Only draw back now is the heat a 22" monitor throws off. The Samsung 226BW looks beautiful and I’m seeing things in my old games I've never noticed before. And it only costs 300 bucks!

I wish you could see the model numbers of the monitors on DS's website. But, even so, I still like purchsing monitors locally for the ease of return/exchange.
