Topic: Question about RAMPosted: 03 Jul 2009 at 12:09pm |
|
So, my current computer crashes every game I own, which is frustrating to say the least. Now, I'm not a hardware genius, nor am I a complete idiot, but I can't figure out for the life of me what the problem is. I was reading another post and someone mentioned RAM voltage and that it was better to set it manually. These forums have been a real educational experience, btw. So I pulled one of my sticks of RAM to write down it's info. Went to the manufacturers website and saw that it was tested at 1.9v. I went into my BIOS and noticed that it was set to 1.8v. So my question is this, is the voltage being different than what they say a big deal? Could this be what's been plaguing my computer?
Thanks in advance |

are you by chance over clocked? when i tried oc my system it was crashing everything as well as over heating it. i returned it to stock speed and everything worked fine and at normal temps. we finally figured out i need a better heat sink.
as far as memory goes have you ran the memtest on each stick?
what name / speed is your ram?
i've seen that same request to manually set the voltage to 1.8v on newegg for the corsair ram.

Let's see, nothing on my system is OCd. I've run Memtest. The RAM is Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800Mhz. Very, very, very rarely do I see a BSOD. My crashes are usually "Whatevergame.exe has encountered an error and needs to close. Blah, blah, blah.....send error report......blah, blah, blah"
Now, if this was a game here and there that did this fine, I expect that from time to time, but everything? I mean, Company of Heroes, Left 4 Dead, Empire:Total War, Crysis, FarCry 2, Bioshock and several others. It's been frustrating to say the least because this has been going on for awhile now. Games close out at seemingly random times, sometimes within 5 mins and sometimes I can play for a couple of hours, but they always crash or close out if you will (I say crash but what do I know). Anyway, here's my system specs. Asus M2N32-SLI Premium mobo AMD Athlon FX-62 processor 2GB of the above RAM Nvidia GeForce GTX-280 1GB vid card SB X-Fi Gamer soundcard 1000W PCP&C power supply WinXP 32 w/SP3 Latest drivers for everything |

well first I think you need more ram but I don't think that is your problem.
when you get the error that "whatevergame.exe" has encountered an error, there is some info associated with it, try looking in your event viewer and see what info you can find in there, post the info from the error here and lets see what we can find. |

Ok, so Company of Heroes just crashed and what it did was the screen froze and the sound was looping. Cntl+Alt+Del did it's usual by bringing up the Task Manager behind the game so I couldn't see it. Alt+Tab doesn't work so I had to reset the computer.

Empire:Total War just crashed with the "Empire:Total War.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close". The only thing I could really get off of it was this:
Exception Information: Code: 0xc0000005 Flags: 0x00000000 Record: 0x0000000000000000 Address: 0x000000007c910a19 That's all I could get since it doesn't save it and I couldn't copy and paste it. Not sure if this helps but I hope it does. |

OK then it might be your drivers for GPU or sound card, sound card is the one that give most trouble.
but lets try something, start>all programs>accessories>system tools>system info>here the system info window opens, at the bottom you should see a box "find what" here enter this address: 0x000000007c910a19 now make sure the 2 boxes under this are not checked, and then hit "find". it will take a little bit to search but if it finds something let me know. |

and your gpu drivers from the begining where the 186?
and when you say pretty much, am I to assume that you were never able to play without the game crashing? |

I try to update my drivers when they come out. Usually within a day or so of release. I just formatted and re-installed windows a few days ago so it's clean. Yes, almost all of my games have crashed at some point since the system was built. I've had a couple of games run smooth but most crash. I'll put it this way, I can't sit down in the evening to play a game without it crashing multiple times.

OK then, I'm assuming that your windows is up to date and your games all have up to date patches.
if so. lets try by disabling the sound card in the device manager and then uninstalling its drivers. then try and play your games and lets see if they still crash. if so then we need to try older GPU drivers and see what happens, say a 185, then a 182, then a 179 perhaps. if none of those work then we need to try updating mobo drivers and reinstalling directx. do your games crash on low settings also or in any settigs? I edited my post go back and read the rest please, let us know how it goes. do them one by one, so first try sound card, then gpu older drivers, then mobo drivers and then directx, and you said your ram passed the memtest right?
