Topic: Question about the P8P67 DeluxePosted: 19 Feb 2011 at 8:28pm |
|
I have two 6950s in my P8P67 Deluxe and they are stacked together in the first two PCIe slots therefore sandwhiched together. I want to spread them apart.
I was reading about the 3rd PCIe slot at the bottom. Is this an inferior slot?
the documentation says its PCIe 2.0x16 and in parenthesis it says (x4 mode, compatible with PCIe 1 and x4 devices).
Does this means I can lower it to x4 (in the BIOS) for a device should I want to or that it truly is x4 but can accept x16 devices, it will just drop it to x4 automatically.
The language definately seems to suggest the former, I just want to make sure.
I know using two slots drops my cards from x16 to x8. I'm fine with that, I just dont want them to go to x4. It effects the performance much more than dropping from x16 to x8.

The bottom slot will only run at 4x.....it will seriously cut into the performance of your GPU.....I would leave it where it is....that is just my opinion......where they are now they are running at 8x together.....the deluxe has 1 16x lane...1 8x lane.....and 1 4x lane......when doing SLI the 16x lane runs at 8x....
better to leave it alone...IMO |

you are running x8, x8 right now, only in a single gpu would you run at x16.
x4 does drop performance, but depending on the game, it could be by not much. I would leave it at x8, x8. |

Thank you for the feedback.
, thats why I asked. The documentation was a bit deceiving. I'm going to keep them where they are. Its just unfortunate that I have to keep them so close and the only normal PCI slot is between them. It currently holds my Creative X-fi board. So there is no space whatsoever between my video cards. I think this was just an awful design.

Thats the one I'm using. I'm using the top two PCIe and the middle PCI.
This is why I'm saying there is no space between the two video cards.
It looks like the newer X-Fi cards use PCIe. Maybe I can pick one up used/cheap and use the bottom PCIe slot we talked about previously.

im so confused. your video cards need to be in the first dark blue slot with the clamp on the end and the white slot. So are u trying to add another card or something? If your only using 2 video cards and want to add a sound card you have room wether it uses pci-e or pci. you need to be a bit more specific

After my question was answered, I was just informing my responders that I was disappointed to have to continue to use the top two PCIe slots for my video cards since there is no room whatsoever between the two video cards. I already have an audio card between the two in the only avaialble PCI slot. As pointed out earlier, the lower PCI slot cant be used because its covered by the second ATI 6950.
My X-fi audio card is an older model like this one with the legacy PCI connection. So it wont fit in the smaller lots you pinpointed above.
I have everything plugged in and working. I was just expressing my displeasure with my options regarding the abilit to spread my video cards while not losing performance.

Actually on this board you have more room between sli then older mobos, also the p67 mobos are not really meant for multi gpu setup, they are the lower end SB chips, once the high-end SB chips are out, then the lanes will support better bandwidth.

arent really meant for sli? ..... you need to look at some benchmarks. a 2600k OC'd with SLI will out pace a 1366 mobo with the same 2 video cards. Thats running at x8 x8 compared to 1366's x16 x16 Edited by RiceEatin2000GT - 20 Feb 2011 at 2:10pm |

Thats comparing apples and oranges Rice, wait till x68, or x78 or whatever the mobo for socket 2011r comes out and I will show you the difference, you are comparing 2 different cpus, try tri sli with p67 and x68/x78, and then you will see a good difference, mainly in tri sli.
what do you think Rice, I stopped looking at reviews? lol I'm reading them all still man ![]()
also the new socket will have better bandwidth allowing for somebody like the op to install in the third pci lane with x8 speeds at least, so based on those facts, the p67 is not as sli tri friendly as the x68/x78 will be, tho I dont' expect a big difference in dual sli till gpus max bandwidth on pci lanes, or need more then x8 speeds, but dual sli users will have more options as to which pci lanes to install the card in, giving them better temps in dual sli.
