I learned from the Nvidia user guide that min sys req for power supply is 650 W or greater.
The Lynx Ultimate config shows 600 W. What is the actual wattage of the psu? Thank you for clarifying

Raya you are correct that NVidia does recommend a minimum 650 watt PSU for the RTX 2070 Super. DS is using a 600 watt, and probably they did the math and feel it is just enough. You could ask them about upgrading your build to the Corsair 850 watt....I would.

My Bolt configuration also came with an "under spec" PSU back in the day. I'm sure DS does ample testing to make sure the PSU will work with the system as it's not really in their interest to be sending out loads of systems that just fail. That said, when I did change my GPU for one with lower power consumption I noticed significant acoustic and thermal benefits. So while I would trust that DS has done their homework so to speak, I agree with HockeyBuck, I'd ask for an upgrade, personally.

Guys, you can't upgrade a "pre-built".
@ Raya: I ran the Lynx Ultimate configuration on https://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator and got a peak power usage of about 450W. That's a power draw of ~75% which is a good number to have for decent overhead to spare and efficient power use, IMO. By all means consult with DS about your concerns, but I think, as Hoserator said, DS has ample testing and hundreds of systems out there running just fine.

I did? Thank you, Cretae. While very true and I wholeheartedly agree, I cannot take credit for the same. Looks more like a take on Tidgxor's words.
Can you configure a Lynx with all the same components as a prebuilt and add a larger psu? And how the prices compare? Edited by hoserator - 11 Jan 2020 at 11:31am |

Not sure when that changed, you used to be able to contact DS and change a pre-built for an up-charge. If that service has been removed then I stand corrected.

I don’t believe there is anything DS can’t do if you ask them and are willing to pay.
Even “pre-builds” are built the same as all DS pc’s...they just try to get ahead of orders for some set budget configs. They may prefer to sell those and ship quick without alteration, but I’ll bet they will make a change for the very few folks that ask...customer should expect some delay as well. .

Sorry, Tidgxor, I misidentified you. As long as I've been around, it has been common lore that the pre-builts come as-is, no changes. I've personally never seen anything different. A clone of the Lynx Ultimate with a Corsair 850W PSU would price out at $1816 with the discount vs $1579. But without the discount, the prices wouldn't be close. Of course, DS can do anything they want, it's their company. They can redefine rationales all they want. When I bought my last rig in 2017, DST4ME and bpratt22 acknowledged I'd have to go custom build to upgrade. This was also my understanding from 2010. If I'm mistaken it's news to me.

No worries. I've been misidentified for much worse things.
As for the swap-out, it's entirely possible I'm wrong. I thought I remembered Alex saying something about being able to upgrade certain parts on prebuilds for some sort of service charge, but then again this was way back in the ODE 1 days, so it's easily dated information. |
