Waiting for my build to get done, and it will come with a 1tb SSD. I have one, maybe two questions....
1) Is there any advantage to partitioning the hard drive into a system only drive and a general use drive? 2) If question #1=yes, then with Windows 11 what would be the proper size for the system only drive? TIA for the input Lon |

It really is up to you. Some users like partitioning when the drive is large to speed up certain processes. With the new SSDs, speed has become a relative term and not the reason originally premised therefor. I have 1 TB non-partitioned primary drives in 3 systems and have no complaints (yet).

I also have multiple systems with primary OS Drive not partitioned. Never felt the need, one reason being my files are primarily games, not any kind of critical data. One reason to partition is if you get corrupted files the OS and data files stay seperated, easier to reformat. My opinion is that a bad drive is more likely and partition doesn’t matter.
But, up to you like hose said. Nothing wrong with it. You sometimes lose storage space when partitioning but not huge.

I have been an advocate of partitioning, but I bow to my friends' more modern take on it. My NVMe SSD is a Samsung 960, and the much newer 980 is over twice as quick. I like a compact drive for faster, easier scans and back-ups mostly, but hoserator says his 1TB 980 is plenty fast enough.
If still on the table, the size depends on what your non-gaming software needs are. If all you use are the OS and a couple of essential apps and maintenance software, you could probably get by with ~100 GB. If you have Office or the like and some other large programs, 150-200 GB would be plenty.

I have a 500GB 980 for the OS & daily games, 1TB 970 for my game library and general use, as well as a 1TB HD for documents & music. Seems to work out for me.
