Sorry if this is off topic, but I need help. Ever since i starting taking chem life just didn't feel the same. I had no interest in this topic only be forced upon by my parents. I really didn't know where to turn to for advice, other than here where there are full of people with the same interests as I do. I want to change majors and wanted to know where i should start if anyone has any opinions of what courses i should take that allows me to furhter gain knowledge of computers. Thanks. Again sorry for posting this, I just want a happy future.

Well, it is the General Discussion forum, so I don't really think its possible to be off-topic, unless it falls specifically into one of the other forums' categories.
![]() Your question is really pretty broad, a lot of variables involved. But you definitely shouldn't spend your money (or your parents) taking courses you hate (Outside of those few that every hates and still has to take ). Yes, a degree does not by any means equal a job in that specific field (I am a case study for that), but at the same time there are very few reasons to go towards a BS (Or any degree) that you loath. Having said that, what programs does your college offer? Normally schools have departments specifically for people such as yourself, where you can ask these questions and likely be given specific course numbers to consider. Why would they force you into Chemistry? It has good employment prospects right now (Chemical Engineering), but its just so random. Computer Science is a lot more recession proof(a lot of Chem E jobs are petroleum based, when the price of oil tanks your job can too) and IT professionals of all types are always in demand. Outsourcing to India/elsewhere is starting to prove ineffective, so local hiring is exploding. I would be bored to tears in IT (essentially just a business support function), but if you love working with fancy computers, this is where its at.
If you have a technical/quantitative mind, analytics and applied math of all types is going to become more and more in demand over your lifetime as the economies of scale and competitiveness of companies continue to increase. If you need H1B visa support, beware of math/engineering fields. They are much more competitive for non-citizens. Stay in the tough technical degrees. Switching to XXXX Studies will make college much easier, but possibly make the rest of your life much more difficult. Finally, work on your relationship with your parents. You need to communicate your own will and live the life you want, not what other people tell you to do. Your major is your business, and you need to go after something that makes sense and interests you. My friends and family thought getting a math major was stupid, so glad I stuck with it instead of switching to a generic business degree. All the people who told me, "Oh so you want to teach math then" are eating crow now. Obviously just my opinion! I just graduated last May so I don't have the depth of experience as others may. |
