Ok so my pc is supposed to be in today!!!  Wooot!!!  For a   Friday date.

But my question is this, is the system shipped with any type of security program?  Just want to know so I can have a Norton or Mcafee program ready to install on the new machine.  And off hand would you recommend either of the two mentioned above?

Thanks Smile

No, it doesn't.  I installed AVG immediately, and then activated windows, etc.

It'll only come with security software if you requested it in the order and all we offer is McAfee. Which I wouldn't actually recommend with all of the other options out there.

McAfee is great, but, we are working on seeing an alternate option in the future.

Don't get us wrong, McAfee will protect your system.

can I ask one thing (moderators)  why is that (McAfee) all that is offered? Out of all the companies out there that one would be near bottom of list to use IMHO. Personally last 2-3 years I've used System Suite Pro . Even if they offered to install Grisoft or Avast (both free) I probably would've said yes install it. Or work out a deal with some other vendors to give choices. hint hint Pc-cillin,Kapersky,maybe Nod

I run Symantec Anti-virus (Corporate Edition)
and I've never has a issue.  I know people that had some compatabilty issues with McAfee, causing lock-ups and taking alot of resources slowing there computer down.

Pc-cillin is also very good

Offering only one main software package keeps everything easy to manage and organized. We are working on alternatives in the future.

My experience with Norton (Symantec):

I *had* Norton Professional installed at one time, but my wife didn't like it, so I took it off.... or at least tried to. It simply refused to leave when asked. No matter how many ways/ times I tried to uninstall it just would not get off my HDD.

After contacting Symantec, chatting with a sevice rep, downloading 6 pages of registry changes I had to input manually in order to uninstall (no, NOT joking), which the service rep cautioned me could fry my system if I got so much as one entry wrong; I prepared to uninstall this wonderful product. After running through those 6 pages of registry keys for the 4th time to ensure I hadn't transposed or otherwise botched an entry, I was rid of it.... or so I thought.

After about 2 years, my HDD seemed to have a growing problem.... What started out as a small reserved section, continued to grow... and grow... and well, you get the idea. Eventually it was consuming over 50% of my HDD space. I did a listing of all files and directories and actually did the math by hand just to verify what the system was reporting was correct. I should have had 80% free space, not 10% according to my math, but the system couldn't tell me where all the missing GB had gone.

After rooting around in the DOS environment, I located a Symantec folder... "That's odd", I thought, "I haven't run any Symantec products in years".

"Censored" is what actually came from my mouth.

I could see that there was a directory, I could see there were files, and I could see where the missing HDD space was going. After much trial and error, I was finally able to delete it.

It turns out there was a hidden file that was making a copy of every single thing I had ever deleted from my HDD, and it had remained active even after Norton AV was supposedly "uninstalled". I don't install/uninstall alot of programs, so it took me a while to notice the effect and my increadible shrinking hard drive.

I've had viruses that were easier to get rid of, and caused me less hassle than Norton AV.

Wow, man, i've had problems with Norton before but it's nothing compared to you. From my experience with Norton products : it took too much resources, hard to uninstall and doesn't play nice with other software. McAfee on the other hand didn't give me any big problems but I wouldn't use either ones when there are better alternatives out there.
