Questions:
  1. I live in a 3rd floor vintage Chicago building and I don't use a/c Smile.  It can get quite hot here in the summer.  Kelly recommended the CM 830 but I like the design of the SilverStone.  How many fans should I add to keep the case nice and cool?  Are the stock fans sufficient or do I need to upgrade them?
  2. This really isn't a question, just a to-do.  I'm thinking of going with Vista 64 but need to research support for some of my favorite apps.
    • Everquest 2!  Some people continue to have issues so I'll look into this.
    • Fubar 2000.  Who would use anything else?!?!
    • Burrrn.  Nice and light but I can find a rep for this little app if it's not supported.
  3. I'm planning to re-use 2 HD's but they are imaged with XP.  If my new main drive has Vista 64, will I be able to access the files on my XP drives?  Will I be able to boot into my XP drive if I choose to?
    • Let's say /buggyCode = True with EQ2 and Vista --> can I just book into XP and play the game?
  4. Is the Q6600 offered with G0 stepping?
  5. Can I really get away with a Corsair 620?  I'll probably set up SLI in 2008 and will have 3-4 HD's running.

You guys are great.  I've learned a lot from reading the forums the past few weeks and your input is Thumbs%20Up

1.  The Extreme is equiped with side vents to facilitate positive air flow (intake), unlike my Pro case which has problems drawing in enough air to cool the CPU sufficiently. Bill The Cat seems to love his and gets very good idle temps. Having said that, the Ultra has the capability to mount an additional 4x 80mm fans on the side panel if you run into problems with that Chicago heat in the summer. If you do go with the Extreme, I would ask for them to add in the optional fans. I believe the Extreme supports up to 5. They are cheap, the Silverstone fans are quiet, and having too much airflow is a bit like having too much money- I haven't experienced either yet and don't believe I will.

3. I'm not sure. I boot off a single OS HDD with both XP and Vista. I think you could do what you're asking, but you might have to change boot order in the BIOS in order to select between OS.

4. Yes, and ask for it. Had I known before I placed my order how much more temperature tolerant the G0 is, I would have found more room in my budget to pay the premium for the G0 stepping.

5. Power Supply Calculator  I just tried a setup with everything you described at 100% load and came to 584 W, worst case, using a B3 stepping CPU. Yes, the Corsair can handle that. I don't know anything about the new Silverstone PSU's DSO is offering, but will say my Corsair is amazing. I would ask Kelly what his impression is of the Silverstone product. I highly doubt Silverstone is making their own, so there is probably an established performance/reliability track record for whomever is manufacturing the units for them. If DSO switched to the Silverstone from Thermaltake, there must be a good reason for this.

With respect to the Q6600, I believe the only ones that DS currently uses are G0 stepping based on some recent correspondence I had regarding my order, so you should be good there...

Tyler, the fans are 120mm that are optional in the Ultra

I am not a fan of the silverstone PSU.  Not saying they're crap or anything, I just prefer something with a little more name to them when it comes to power.

Look closer. It's labeled as "Digital Storm TwisterBoost Technology" right below "Digital Storm Workshop".
The only thing that keeps me wishing on a wishing star.

Hmm. Definately don't want to hand out bad info Embarrassed, I know there are several possible configurations for fans in the Stacker, is that a single side mounted 120 for the Ultra?

  1. I have no idea what Chicago is like in the summer. Could be colder than a witch's  Censored. I like the TJ9, but it's expensive; probably worth it. I was kind of surprised at how hot HDs get. If you put 3 HDs in a TJ9, I'd consider adding the 120mm fan that can go between the transverse drive bays. As an alternative I'd also consider this thing http://www.masscool.com/masscool/Imagep/SHF1-UTRA-BK_L.jpg I have no idea how well it works, but it would look "cool" staring out from one of the TJ9's drive bays.
  2. No Clue
  3. 1) Yes. 2) Not from the existing installation. That install isn't going to understand anything about your new machine. Creating a duel boot machine from scratch using those HDs shoud be easy.
  4. Sure.
  5. Answered by others
  6. Probably, but get a 750 anyway.
