    Posted: 18 Dec 2007 at 3:54pm

I’m planning on getting a new system soon and have heard good things about digital storm so here I am.  I configured a pro setup with specs below.  I have a few questions with regard to this setup.  I’ll list these below in grouped categories to simply and streamline any responses.

Memory questions.

1) Which is better for overclocking memory… clock speed or timing?  Is it possible to have digital storm do both even though its not listed as an option in the configurater?

2) Which is better memory choice… Corsair dominator 800 Mhz (listed as high performance) or Corsair XMS2 800 Mhz (listed as extreme performance)?

3) Would I be better off going for 1066 Mhz instead of the 800 Mhz?  If so is the XMS2 better than the Dominator as its listed in the configurater?  I thought that the dominator was a step up from the MXS2 but maybe im wrong.

Operating System questions

1) Is it possible to get a dual boot setup with Vista Home Prem 64 bit and xp.  It is not listed as an option in the configurater.

Cooling questions

1) Is it possible to have a thermalright 120 extreme mounted onto the cpu as opposed to the options provided.  If so what sort of costs would I be looking at?

2) Is it possible to have thermaltake DuOrbs mounted on my gpus and if so at what cost?

Case questions

1) Will the cosmos fit all of this without any issues?  Are there any issues I should be concerned about in regards to the cosmos case?

Oh I thought of one more thing.  What about the new 780i motherboards...  Will you carry them and if so how long before you have them up as an option.  Something I may want to wait on rather than get the 680 and then have to upgrade in the near future.

Memory questions.

1) Don't really understand your question but you are adjusting both when you overclock ram.

2) The Corsair Dominator are performance ram while the XMS series is mainstream.

3) You want the faster ram if you are going to be upgrading to a 1600fsb cpu in the future or overclocking the cpu to the extreme.

Operating System questions

1) Yes, you can request it through phone or email.

Cooling questions

1 & 2) Yes, you can request it through phone or email.

Case questions

1) The cosmos was mainly designed for liquid cooling in mind. The Ultra would be a better pick for your config.

The 780i was just released on Monday and should be on the config page pretty soon.

And 1000W PSU is sort of overkill. A 750W can handle that setup without problems.

As to the first question that I confused you with maybe I can be more clear.  In the configurater you give the option of overclocking the memory, but you give 2 options the first being over clock the clock speed and the second is the timings.  I assume I have to pick one or the other so I was wondering which would be best.  Is this a mistake how its presented in the configurater?  Or am I misunderstanding something...?

next thing... is there anyway to get an idea about price when asking for the thermalright ultra120 extreme and gpu coolers i requested before buying?  Or am I going to have to order and then ask about price...?

And last of all about the case... I would expect the ultra case to be best for my config as you suggested but im in love with the cosmos case.  Quiet is important to me as well as appearance.  Will the cosmos case be adequate based on the above config?  Will there be issues fitting everything as I know the thermalright ultra120 extreme is a bit of a beast.  Im also concerned that the gpu coolers i listed above may not fit in sli or at least could be very very tight.  Obviously watercooling is much quieter and more efficient at cooling.   I have concerns though about leaks wreaking havoc on my system though.  Also I'm not very familiar with what watercooling maintenance consist of.  Perhaps you could convince me its a worthwhile rout to go.  I just dont want to have to deal with that sort of thing every week.  I would also assume that evaporation would be something id have to concern myself with.  Any advise as to the watercooling would be appreciated as that would also save me the cost of the gpu and cpu cooling solutions I originally asked about.  Thanks again for chiming in...

Oh and as for the 1000 watt power supply... I know its overkill but i want to have it in case i feel the need to expand or do some things in the future.

The case is huge so space shouldn't be an issue.

You will be able to SLI with the Thermaltake Duorbs.

Call them and ask about the pricing of the items you are interested in and they will tell you. You will probably pay the newegg price and maybe a little extra labor fee =x

For cooling, no matter which route you go, you will be doing some sort of maintenance =p

Water cooling maintenance just requires you to refill the liquid if it gets low. There should be little to no evaporation at all. Your computer won't blow up if there's a leak since the liquid will be non-conductive, so nothing to worry about there except for a big mess you will have to clean up. It is also recommended to make sure there are no leaks, clogs, part failure, ... every now and then.

Air cooling, you have fans blowing dust in your case so you are going to have to clean the case and fans monthly or quarterly.
