I would appreciate any comments about the new system I'm planning to buy, and also have a few questions. Note this system will be mostly used to play strategy games such as Spore (when it comes out), The Sims 2, Rollercoaster Tycoon 3, Age of Empires 3... I don't play a lot of action games like shooters or RTS, but I might play car racing games or something like Flight Simulator X.
So, this is what I'm thinking about so far (questions below): Case: Digital Storm Twister EXTREME (Black Anodized Aluminum Finish) ? Power Supply: 620W Corsair HX (Dual SLI Compatible) (Silent Edition) ? Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz (1066MHz FSB) (8MB Cache) ? Motherboard: nVidia 680i LT Core 2 Quad (By: eVGA) (nForce 680i SLI) ? Memory: 2GB DDR2 Corsair at 1066MHz Dominator (Dual Channel) ? (Extreme-Performance) Floppy / Card: - No Thanks Hard Drive 1: 500GB Western Digital (16MB Cache) (7200 RPM) (SATA) Hard Drive 2: 500GB Western Digital (16MB Cache) (7200 RPM) (SATA) Raid Option: - No Thanks Hard Drive 3: - No Thanks Optical Drive 1: DVD-ROM/CD-ROM (DVD Reader 16x / CD Reader 40x) Optical Drive 2: DVD±R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 20x / CD-Writer 48x) Network Card: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Video Card: nVidia GeForce 8800GTX 768MB (By: eVGA) (PCI-Express) TV Tuner: - No Thanks Sound Card: Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer (Up to 7.1 Channel) (Recommended) Physics Card: - No Thanks Cooling: Air Cooled Stage 2 (Silent Artic Cooling Heat-sink (Copper Heatpipes) Case Lighting: Blizzard Internal Lighting (Blue Edition) (Cold Cathode Tubes) Round Cables: Enhanced Interior Air Flow (Optical Drive & Floppy Cables (Blue Edition) User Manual: Personalized Platinum Digital Storm Binder (Includes Paperwork/Benchmarks/CDs/Manuals) Overclock Processor: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my processor Overclock Video Card: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) Overclock Memory: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my memory Tweak Windows: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Dual Boot (Windows XP Home & Windows Vista Home Premium) ? Restore Kit: Digital Storm Specialized Recovery System (DVD Image Based) Protection: - No Thanks Office: - No Thanks Benchmarking: - No Thanks Pre-Install Game: - No Thanks LCD Display: Acer 22 inch (Widescreen) (Black) (High-Performance Gaming Display) Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: Logitech 2.1 System (Black Edition) (Model R20) (Includes Subwoofer) Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks Questions: Case: Not sure which case to pick. I was going to go with the PRO case, but I'm wondering if it's going to have enough air flow for the CPU and graphic card I picked? Or should I go with the ULTRA or EXTREME case? (that's a lot of extra $ for a case though...) Also, I would like to know if either of those cases can be opened without having to put the computer on its side? Which would you recommend? Power Supply: Is 620W going to be enough, as long as I don't add any other components? Or should I go a little higher in case I'd want to add something? Processor: I'm hesitating between the Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 at 2.4 GHz, and the Duo at either 2.33 or 2.66 GHz. Not really sure I need a Quad core for what I'm going to use this computer for (mostly gaming). Motherboard: What's that "A1 revision" on the nVidia 680i Core 2 Quad motherboard? Do I need that? Or should I pick another motherboard? Memory: Vista 32-bit cannot see above 2GB of RAM, correct? OS: Anything/problems I should be aware about dual-boot systems? I was delighted to find out DS offered this option, and that I could still have XP around on top of Vista. Any other comments/suggestions/recommendations appreciated. I also want to thank Digital Storm for having this public forum available. It says a lot about how confident they are about their products and service, for good reason I'm sure. This definitely helps making me trust a company I didn't know anything about prior to my recent computer hunt. |

This is all my opinion.
Ultra/extreme cases are really nice, nobody complains about them. I went with ultra, its real easy to take apart and has good airflow.
PSU is sufficient.
Processsor, I would say go for a higher 2 core than lower 4 core, but if you're choice is between a duo 2.66 or quad 2.4 def go witht he quad and have it overclock to if you're lucky 3.0. I went with a 3.0 Duo and got clocked to 3.5
A1 revision means it has more options for overclocking, so i've been told. In theory they will be able to overclock your CPU higher if you choose that motherboard.
On terms of 2GB memory, the easy answer is yes. It recognizes a little more, and that depends on video card and everything, just keep it at yes.. that's all it recognizes.
Do you plan on overclocking yourself?

Case:
Not sure which case to pick. I think you did a great job picking a case. Although I am not a fan of the Silverstone cases, this one does the job. But since you're asking, I recommend the Coolermaster Stacker 830(Our Ultra case) because not only does it look mean, it's the best case on the market for air cooling.
Power Supply: Is 620W going to be enough, as long as I don't add any other components? Or should I go a little higher in case I'd want to add something? I always say more is better!!!!!
Processor: I'm hesitating between the Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 at 2.4 GHz, and the Duo at either 2.33 or 2.66 GHz. Not really sure I need a Quad core for what I'm going to use this computer for (mostly gaming). No, you don't need it for gaming but I always say 4 is better than 2. :) MOre cores to process stuff is better than 2 cores processing faster. It all evens out in the end...
Motherboard: What's that "A1 revision" on the nVidia 680i Core 2 Quad motherboard? Do I need that? Or should I pick another motherboard? The A1 is a revision for the 680i series. Basically when this chipset came out it was before the quads hit the street. Then when the quads hit the street, the current boards couldn't handle them so they made a revision, or A1 if you will, and now that's what supports quad core. It basically means it's the latest revision before the 780. We just use it to seperate teh 680i and the 680i LT.
Memory: Vista 32-bit cannot see above 2GB of RAM, correct? It see's it but it doesn't/cannot use it.
OS: Anything/problems I should be aware about dual-boot systems? I was delighted to find out DS offered this option, and that I could still have XP around on top of Vista. None what so ever.
Any other comments/suggestions/recommendations appreciated. You did an awesome job!! :) I also want to thank Digital Storm for having this public forum available. It says a lot about how confident they are about their products and service, for good reason I'm sure. So if I have a 32-bit and 3 gigs of ram, the computer would run as though it had 2?

Isn't it something around 3.2ish GB that a 32 bit OS can use? I know there's the calculation out there somewhere; I'm just too lazy to find it :P |

So, taking Solo and Kelly's advice into consideration, I think I'll go with the Quad Core Q6600, and probably select the option to have it overclocked (I was a bit nervous about this...) Will also get the 750W power supply, just in case.
I just need a few more clarifications before I place my order: Case: I thought the Extreme was the best for air flow, but since Kelly says the Ultra is best for that, that's definitely what I'll pick. Just one question though. Does this case opens with a side door that does not require to put the computer down on its side? (might be a stupid question... I have a 6-year old computer and I hate to have to put it flat on the floor to open it up). Motherboard: So if I get a Quad Core CPU, I must choose the "A1 revision" motherboard option? Thanks again for your help :) |

Thanks, Solo! I'm glad to know the Ultra has an easy slide-off panel! :)
All that remains now is my motherboard question, and I think I'll be all set and ready to order (still a bit worried about overclocking the CPU though...) |

You don't need the A1 for a quad-core, but the A1 is the best motherboard for overclocking unless you wanted to go with the Asus maximus(which doesn't have sli).

i thought the ram issue with vista (and xp) was that you could run upto 4gig but it would take off stupid things like video ram etc?
Im currently running 4gb under xp and it shows as 3.25gb
