Hey guys,

I finally got the time to post this up, currently deployed so I usually only have enough time to drop a comment or two.

Just curious now, whats your thoughts with my current build?
I'm planning on using it for several things, Gaming, Video Editing, Flight Sims,
and I'm even starting a home project, turning my home into a computer run system. I got a buddy of mine who can control his entire house through his computer, so I'm looking into applications for this as well. Any thoughts? You know those velociraptors arent as great as they used to be.  The 64mb cached Western Digital 6gb SATA drives actually benchmark faster these days. 

Or why not go for the 2 drive non raid option?  a +100GB SSD as your primary(OS/Apps)  and then a 1TB drive for you data

I was debating going SSD, however since I do already own two 120GB SSDs back home, I might go that route when I get back stateside.

How much faster are the 64mb cached WD 6bg SATA drives, compared to a VR?

would need an exact model number on the VR's to check, but lets just say that the 64mb cached WD's are in some cases faster than some of the first gen SSD's.

what is really "fun" is that the 2tb version is benchedmarked faster than the 1tb.

All ssds are not the same, there is no vr that is faster then a intel x25 gen2 ssd, you need to compare the 4k file size speeds and not just transfer speeds, for an os drive the 4k size is what counts.


If I were to go raid, I would rather do ssd in raid, keep in mind raid does not help with seektime and small file speeds much, it only helps your large file speeds, pretty much transfer speeds. the black caviar has faster transfer speed then the vr.

first let me say I would change that whole build around, but before I do, I need to know the res you will be gaming at and what kind of games.

Well I do have two 120 intel SSDs at home, I might go ahead and switch everything up when the rig arrives.
I went with the VR's originally because I've had a few friends go with the Raid0 SSDs and their SSDs would just die within a few months. I've heard that Intel is the way you want to go with SSD, and maybe its because they had OCZ SSD? I'm not too sure.

The resolution I'll be at is 5040x1050 I believe?
I'll be using three 23 inch Monitors. (Asus 3D Panels 23 inch VG236H)

Yes OCZ is notorios for their ssds going bad, most people don't know that all ssds are not the same, and to compare 4k file speeds for an os drive, the maker, the controller all make a good difference, there are new models of intel ssd that we would not recommend, so you have to know whats good and whats not, dargoon always has good info on ssds.


I see about the monitors, now are you planing on going tri sli or would you like the ability?

What would be a good Controller to use in this case? I believe I only have what comes standard, nothing special.

I have 2 Intel X25-M SSDSA2MH120G2K5 2.5 120GBs at the house.
I want to make the switch to SSD's eventually, I'm in no rush, though.

I'll also be using the three monitors in 3D gaming. I'll only get the Third 580 in my rig and go Tri Sli if I absolutely need it. And If I do go Tri Sli, I'll probably have to send the rig back to DSO, 'cause I'll want the third card cooled with liquid cooling.

I'd definitely like the ability to later in the future, though.

I was talking about the controller inside the ssd itself.

ok well I can show you a SB build for tri sli but it won't do great, cause this is not the high end platform of it, that will leave us to going back to the x58 platform, we can do that, but for a build like yours, are you sure you don't want to wait till q4 when the high end SB platform comes out? you know the 2600k beats the 980x/990x in most stuff?

Ah, I see.

I'd probably wait for Q4, I'm in no rush for anything.

I wasn't aware that the 2600K beat the 980x/990x in must stuff, either.

How does the 2600k Benchmark vs the 980x/990x?

Is the 980x pretty easy to overclock for a user not very knowledgeable on how to overclock a PSU? I've always had a buddy OC my rig before hand, but I want to overclock my system, myself to at least 4.4 or 4.5. I figure I might as well start learning. haha

SB is easier to oc for somebody who has not oced much, 990x is more for very experienced OCers.

for $50 you can have DS oc the SB to the 4.0 - 4.7Ghz range.

Well, I'm taking an interest in learning a few things about OC'ing and such. So I'm getting to a point where I'm trying to learn how to do these things, so in the future I won't have to pay someone to do something I could do myself.

Plus there are several applications I could use the experience for, such as overseas jobs working for the Army, as I have several contracting buddies here in Kuwait, Iraq, and Afghanistan making an easy 230k a year, and all they do is basically do what the DS team does on the forums, helping others out making sure systems are up to date, running on the latest drivers/firmware etc.

So when my system hits my doorstep, I'll be either teaching myself how to do it, or hopefully I'll be receiving a little help. haha
