Topic: Quick question on RAM upgrade compatibility Posted: 02 Dec 2019 at 5:12pm |
Specifications:
-2016 Digital Storm Apollo build -Motherboard: ASUS Z170 Pro Gaming (Intel Z170 chipset) (Up to 5x PCI-E Devices) -System memory: 32 GB DDR4 3000MHz Digital Storm certified performance series -CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0 GHz I want to upgrade my RAM to 64 GB. Question 1: Are there 16 GB units that would be compatible with my current 2 x 16 GB units? Question 2: If the answer to question 1 is "No", what are recommendations for a whole new 64 GB RAM set? My biggest issue is not knowing how to check for motherboard compatibility. Bonus question: What's the max RAM in principle possible with my build? Thanks in advance to anyone kind enough to help out. Edited by wraith720 - 02 Dec 2019 at 6:01pm |

Welcome to the forum wraith720!
Your motherboard should have a total of 4 DIMM slots for DDR4 RAM. If you currently have 2 X 16 GB DIMM sticks then you should have 2 open slots for more RAM. Your motherboard can use up to 64 GB max. You need to match the RAM you have, so either ask DS what the Timing numbers are for your RAM, or check for a sticker along one side of the RAM DIMM stick...a label that lists a set of 4 numbers with dashes...such as 9-9-9-24 or similar. You want another 2 X 16 GB set of DDR4 3000 MHZ speed RAM with the same timing numbers. That would give you 64 GB total. You could also look for a 2X 8 GB kit or a 2 X 4 GB kit if you just need 48 GB total or 40 GB total. You could also just ask DS and buy more matching DS RAM from them. |
