Congrats on your new ODE 1. You don't want to put it in sleep mode, to many problems getting out of sleep mode. As for me when I know I am done I just shut it down using the start then shut down.

Don't use sleep mode. Lots of people have problems waking the Pc afterwards. In my opinion, if you leave for more than an hour, shut it down. It only takes a minute or two to power on to clickable icons.

Unless you are folding or having your computer do something else on it's own when you are not using it turn it off. Any mechanical or electrical par breakdown with use. Leaving the computer on 24/7, except when you have it doing something, will only serve to wear it out and run up your electric bill.
It's a myth that leaving your computer on all the time is better for it. Your parts do not suffer any power surge when turning your system on. You're work or some place may leave their computers on 24/7 but there are two main reasons for that. Leaving the computers on after everyone goes home allows the IT department to remotely service all the systems and apply updates. Also, it's a proven loss in productivity if your employee's have to sit around waiting for their computers to boot up each morning. The pos work stations you find most often in an office environment are not going to have the quick boot times of your home system. Some employers actually got sued for not paying their employees during those few minutes while they let the systems boot up. The state of Illinois made all their workers at all their various government offices turn theirs off to save money on their electrical bills. The state employees sued for unpaid work and won. Anyways, back on topic, if you are not going to be using your computer for several hours because you are going to be asleep or out of the house at work or school, just turn it off. You gain nothing by leaving it on but you do lose money. |

I will have to disagree, there is nothing wrong with leaving your pc on, I have pcs here over 8 years old and they are on 24/7, unless you are hurting for $80 a year extra in electricity bill there is no reason to turn pc off.
but if you like to turn it off thats fine too. When I'm away is when my pcs do all the maintenance, av scan defrag, gc, backup and etc. Edited by DST4ME - 31 Dec 2011 at 8:38pm |

Well there is the electric bill that you already mentioned then there is the simple physics of the more you using something the faster it wears out. Can you run your system like that for several years and not have issues, yes, but that does not mean everyone will. The more your parts have to work the quicker they will wear out.
Again, you gain absolutely nothing by leaving your system on when not in use. |

In theory yes, however if operated within their limits parts will last for years running 24/7 on pcs, thats how they are.
I'm not just talking about my pcs, friends family, net, if you look at a company that leaves on their pcs 24/7, you will see that 90% of those pcs are fine, 10% will have issues, no one can say clearly that those 10% went bad because they were on 24/7, there are lot of users that turn off their pc and still have parts go bad. So again in theory you are correct however in real life, when operated within their limits, they will work for a long time, on top of that things like ram/ss don't have moving parts, they are not going to go bad because of excessive use like hdds do. Also most times if problem does arise its after 6 years so by that time your pc is pretty much old to begin with and probably not in use for much longer. As for gaining, as I mentioned my pcs do their management when I'm away so when I'm on the pc all the power is free to be used by what I want to use and not background tasks, then there is the instant access to my pc, I know you gonna say with ssd it takes few seconds, but I have no reason to not have instant access, I own and have build may pcs in my time, from my own pcs, to my family and friends pcs which I build and maintain, I have not seen one reason to turn off a pc. Its a personal choice and $80 a year, wear and tear does not come into play. Edited by DST4ME - 31 Dec 2011 at 8:59pm |
