Hi everyone,

These forums have been very helpful for answering most of the many questions I had concerning my new build and have also convinced me to go with DS. I still have a couple of small issues though. Please see my proposed build:

http://www.digitalstormonline.com/comploadsaved.asp?id=435866

My first issue is noise level. I’d like as quiet a machine as possible that will still have reasonably high performance. I do not intend to overclock beyond the level for the CPU offered for free, so I suppose I don’t need an extremely well cooled system. For the moment I have gone with the Lian Li PC-P80B, under the assumption that it’s quiet but perhaps this is unnecessary and any of the cheaper BlackOPS cases would be just as good. Also, it doesn’t have the side window which my son would like, or the many bright interior lights calculated to intrigue the mind of a six yr old, although either way the machine will almost certainly be a substantial improvement over the ZX Spectrum I had when I was his age.

The other thing I would like to know is if DS would be prepared to partition the data HDD and install another OS (Ubuntu) for me. I’d like a dual boot system preferably.

Thanks very much for any advice or suggestions!

this is probably going to come off sounding arrogant, but i dont intend it to. that case is like the streched escalade of cases, the build youre looking at isnt really "meant" for it. the case is about $300 by itself

i wouldnt expect it to be too quiet, its stock setup uses 5 fans, none of which are over 140mm, and the smaller the fan the louder its tends to be. youre likely going to find the quietest case to be the assassin. this doesnt even address how huge this case is, the specs show 25.24" x 8.66" x 24.92" .....

i would definitely say to move your secondary drive up to 500gb.. its $9 for almost double the space

everything else looks pretty good

personally if i were going for something cool looking and quiet, id get the hafx or 932 and have the fans tuned down, these are big boys, 220mms, even tuned down they will move air well, plus cathode lighting in these cases looks pretty sweet, as you can see in my signature below, you could even get 3 color options like i did, im sure that would intrigue your kids

the Lian Li PC-P80B is quiet.  I don't remember for sure, but most all Lian Li have built in fan control.

I do not know if it is much more quiet than the Assassin case though.
You do not need large fans to quiet well, and silent. You can have 20 good quality fans, that are 120MM and move more air, have higher air velocity, and make less noise than a few monster crap fans.

i agree justin just going on the assumption that most cases will skimp you on the stock fans... though lian li is less likely to do that then most other companies

a built in fan control or DSO's fan control could of course address this, if its the case you really want band

If you want a quiet system, make sure you select at least our 'Stage 1' Noise Suppression package. This lets our techs know you want a quiet machine and if it isn't quiet in our facility, we'll call you about it and provide suggestions.

Thanks everyone for the quick replies. I will go with the larger HDD as suggested.

About the case, I'm still not sure. I do indeed like the industrial look of the HAF 932 and might go with that case, but on the other hand DS rates the Cooler Master Elite 430 as  low noise. Also, it saves a bit of cash which could be put towards a larger SSD for example. The case is comparatively much smaller than the others I looked at - are there likely to be any serious implications for this build? Thanks!

Hi BandGap,

If you want a case with good cooling take a look at the HAF 922. It is a step down from the 933. With the LE mobo and the stage 1 nocha you will have plenty of room for everything including your sound card.

Thanks FrankW! Yes the 922 looks good and the reviews say it is quiet.

I also like the Raven 2 case, although it's fairly expensive. It's quiet and the 90 degree rotated motherboard concept seems interesting. Any thoughts?

You're right of course - thing is I hate being forced to think outside of work hours and was hoping someone would do it for me.

Why do they have to offer so many options? This is killing me.

Hi !ender_,

We had a look at your build - very nice! If we got three colors would they come with switches like yours to allow different combinations?

Thanks!

yea the cathodes that i used in that build i actually orderd from DSO as individual pieces, along with a few other things. the blue fans in my build, however, only come with the more expensive HAF 932 Blue
each of the fans have thier own on/off switch, so its 4 switches to turn on all the blue, but only 1 switch per 2 cathode lights, so 1 switch for the 2 red and one for the 2 green tubes
the only disadvantage to this is that they cover up 2 pci slots... so im actually goign to mod mine to have both switchs on one pci slot, dso may be able to do that for you, if you are interested

Agreed. Funny, I actually gave my girlfriend a copy and she is currently tearing through it. Going to finish it in two days, I'm impressed. I, too, love the series and have read the book many times. They have been trying to make a movie out of it for some time but Card has had problems with the script I believe. To give you some idea of how long they have been trying, the first person they thought of to play ender was Hayley Joel Osman (sp?).

Anyways, awesome name. Awesome.

yea i remember that, there were multiple other problems with the ideas too, mainly the age range of the kids that would be involved.. that + nudity and brutality didnt sit well with hollywood and card didnt want to change anything, as he shouldnt
plus, if a movie came out, (ive thought about this a lot) i probably wouldnt see it, at least not with a lot of hope. i have the book, thats how card chose to write it, we all know hollywood would loose a lot of it in translation, pretty unlikely it would do the story justice
