Could not get wife's approval for anything more than 1500. so configed this, ticket #: 233912. with $100 off, close to 1557.
Just wondering what would be the first couple things to upgrade (don't have to tell the wife) in next 2-3 months.

My opinion... save the money on the anti virus (lots of good free ones out there) and game and upgrade to a stage 2 air cooling
now, I am certainly not proclaiming to be an expert, far from it in fact. But those are the things I would change right off the bat. And get a read/write drive!!!
Then I'd consider getting a 500gb HDD too...

change your mobo to EVGA.
rest looks good, I would recommend getting your own security apps. the only thing is that the 920 OCes very well, if we could add the v8 for cooling and OC the CPU you PC would be faster then some $4000 PCs out there. to add those the price comes to $1816 and you get another 100 off when you press submit. I can't stress how much Worth the money that is. basically stock 920 you have 2.66GHz speed, with the OC you will have a PC that is between 3.5 to 3.8GHz (we have a few people here that have 920 on v8 with OC of 3.8GHz), that is a huge difference, you are getting faster speeds then a stock 965 for $900 less then it costs to get the 965. once you have that then you got yourself a hell of a system to upgrade, then your upgrade recommendations are : 1. add 3GB more ram 2. upgrade your GPU or add another (only if you see the current GPU is not giving you what you like to have, or if you just want more GPU power) 3. upgrade your HDD1 to a veloci raptor or SSD and use your current 320GB as HDD2 for personal/media file storage. I have a guide to help you move the stuff from current drive to a veloci raptor or SSD, easy and quick ![]() by 3rd step, you are done upgrading, and you got your self a beast. |

drop the AntiVirus and game.
switch mobo to EVGA. The trade-off right now is whether to decreas PSU and get Air stage 1 cooling.
How much power is needed to safely putting in a 295 later on?

PSU plays a big part in upgradability, infact the PSU would be better to be at 1000w, but 750w is enough to run 2 x 260+ and if needed you can push 2 x 280.
no lees then 750w for a 295 in that system. but with a 1000w you can push 2 x 295. again in a couple of years, you can always change the PSU so that you can use newer cards ![]() Edited by DST4ME - 22 Jan 2009 at 6:16pm |

thx! Now for the cooling, air stage 2 and H20, stage 1, 2 all pretty much within the same price range, which one would you recommend?
Also which PSU is sufficient for a 295?
thx!

thx, dst4me. It seems we posted around the same time twice.
Is 750W enough for 4870 * 2?

You are very wlecome.
well if I put you on LC your price goes to $1996, for this build I think you should go with v8. look at my post before this one for psu need for 295 ![]() lol yes we keep posting at the same time. if you are taking about 2 x 4870x2 I would say the same as 2 x 295, 1000w. 750w can run 1 x 4870x2 tho Edited by DST4ME - 22 Jan 2009 at 6:19pm |

thx!
I put in oc and v8 and evga.
Downgrade the PSU, can 550W handle 1 * 4870 or 1 * 295?
Here is the new build: ticket # 234059. at $1734 ($1634 with $100 off)

if you mean 4870x2 and 295 answer is no, keep the 750w psu, it only goes up in price like 50 bucks, if I upgrade your build you just posted to a 750w, the price goes from 1734 to 1787.
the $1787 system is a solid sure winner. |

Found this review on firingsquad
And I am thinking about install this myself.
couple questions:
1) How hard is it to overclock the CPU? If it involves quite a bit hardware tweaking, I probably will stick with buying V8 from DS and let DS do the overclock.
2) If I decide to install the coolit domino myself, do I first need to uninstall the default fan come with i7 920?

thx!
I was reading other discussions. And "warranty void" came up several times.
Just wondering, would the following three things void the warranty?
1. Obviously, I will upgrade the GPU.
2. Add more RAM
3. Replace main HDD with a faster one.

no, you have to mess with liquid cooling or push things to extreme for warranty to be voided.
none of the things you named will void your warranty |

actually got the wife's approval to up the budget to $2000!
Wondering where I should spend the money on, with the special promotion, it could go up to 2125.
Here is my first cut at $2125, http://www.digitalstormonline.com/comploadsaved.asp?id=240133
Basically,
1) RAM 3G -> 6G, $90
2) GPU, 3870 -> 260, $168
3) PSU, 750W -> 1000 $136
Is this the best way to spend the extra $400?
