Just when I thought I had my system all configured.......

I like the possibilities of a Stage 3 Q9450!

Ha.. it begins.. I think it is a rule of the universe that just days after you order a PC new components are announced - their release imminent, their awesome power poised to pummel your brand-new rig into obscure mediocrity..

hehe

6MB L2 on the Dual Cores..... *Drools*

I'm still running 2MB w/ stock 800MHz FSB..... Very happy with it though. Upgrading would be totally unnecessary.... but fun :)

Thanks for taking the time to post this table and link SkyR.

It's curious that what is presumably the replacement to the Q6600 has a decreased L2 cache size.

I'm amazed you work in a place where you could get any system you wanted, but you make do with less.

Good for you for not being totally materialistic. It's rare to see.

I only notice because I work in a place that sells ski equiment and everyone is obsessesed with having the latest equipment. I must admit I would find it difficult to resist the temptation to buy the latest components to upgrade my pc if I worked there.

As much as I would love to get a Q9450 when available, It makes me wonder if there'll be a nice enough price drop on the Q6600 to make me reconsider waiting.

The Q6600 has a great price already, I don't believe Intel is going to lower it by a big margin any further. They already did a massive price drop recently.

Yup. I hardly doubt there will be another price drop anytime soon.

Guys, the Q6600 is very powerful. It stands up to anything I throw at it. I am quite satisfied with it's performance, and for sometime to come.

Question: How much power do you need?

Well, I'll need it to run my microwave, start my lawn mower, turn off the lights when I go to bed and service my wife when I'm on business trips.

That's all! Big%20smile

Question: How much power do you need?

You can never have enough power.

I have a CPU question though, gaming wise, what really is more important, clock speeds or the amount of cores? Does a faster dual-core perform better than a slower clocked quad-core? When I'm gaming I don't tend to have other application running, or burning CDs at the same time. Does that play a factor in which one is best?

Gaming wise a higher clock cpu will give you a better frame rates. Quad core are better for multi tasking and will run faster with multi-threaded apps. If a quad core can run a game at 30 to 60 fps, then that's all you need. You won't be able to see any difference in game play even if a core 2 duo can run the same game at 100 fps.

If I had a gazzillion dollars, I would have a PC so fast it would make the world stop spinnin" and go backwards! But what I mean by, "How much power do you need", is how much money are you willing to spend to get the latest and greatest (in this case fastest) CPU? And once you have it, will you be bummed becuase something newer and faster becomes available shortly after? Certainly, in time even the PC I just purchaced from DS (Q6600/8800 GTX) will become outdated due to PC game designers competing with one another for more and more eye candy'd games. This is my sixth PC and I have seen all the previous ones become obsolete due to this push for more and more (which I like BTW). My advice is to buy as much PC power as you can when you make your purchace and then don't worry about the latest offerings. You'll go crazy worrying about that kinda stuff. I have a friend who won't purchace a new PC because he's afraid of what might come out a few moths after he makes his purchace. At some point ya gotta jump in. Ya pays ya moneys and ya takes ya chances. I feel I have nuff' power at this point. Everything runs at 75 to 150 FPS. I can only imagine what will become available in the future regarding new PC games, that will bog down this PC I have now. But it will come . . .

I'm starting to hear that more newer games are using multiple threading, and the quad-cores are better at taking advantage of this (a few more FPS).  I just have to realize anything available now will keep me happy for several years anyway.

Nah, you have another 6-7 months before the 9 series will probably come out.
